      worthless job. head gasket get damaged by over-temperature and engine should be discarded. If no over-temp the head gasket can reach 1 million km without issue. that petrol engine sound like old tractor after. You drive too fast for the road and weather conditions.

      I am wondering what the engine ran like before the refresh? Was it really necessary to refresh the engine after 200.000 km?

      about 14 days ago
    • michaelovitch
      michaelovitch In reply to Anders Borum

      @Anders Borum

      On a diesel,the best you can do is removing carbon deposits,and not allowing soot from the EGR and blowby from the cranckcase to mix in the intake.
      (gas do not wash valves like on my car)

      A catch can exposed to cold fresh air will condensate combustion vapors and water vapor well,and not allow carbon build up in the intake.
      A good clean up in the intercooler certainly coated or filled with oil/water will help gain back its original heat exchange properties.

      @michaelovitch Thanks for the quick reply. I follow your instinct on carbon cleaning and am on the verge of doing the same on my 3.0 TDI (A6 Quattro) from 2012 .. it's been running 257.000 km and sounds fine, but it was carbon cleaned as part of a repair at approx 180.000 km and I think it would be a good idea to clean some of the obvious parts like the EGR etc. that are easily servicable.

      It ran well,and run better now,less choke needed,more torque felt.
      Mainly due to the head ports work,it breathes a little better.

      No it was asbolutely no necessary,it could run twice that without being touched.
      I just wanted to do it,for no justified reason except doing it because i wanted to.

      You have to set a new valve clearance with proper thickness shims after such job. 46:00 you can hear the valves ticking cause of lack of adjustment. And you put silicone on exhaust manifold gasket?!?!? Just get a new gasket... Other that that you have done a good job :)

      I swapped involuntarily two shims,so it was noisy ,swapped back and then checked all and adjusted 2 others to be 100% within shop manual values.
      Yes,silicone,to be sure there is no possible vacuum leak.
      I kept the steel gasket,it's in good shape,and it's less money spent.

      Not a good idea putting oil in the bolts way, it builds oil pressure as you tighten the bolts.

      Correct,you can crack an engine block doing that that's why i used grease,and on the thread only, and oil on the washers outside the block so it doesn't fall in.

      @michaelovitch aha 25° extra is significant because the temp valve opens at 82 and ventilator starts at 92 which leaves very little until boiling at 100°. Very interesting to fully understand all aspects of the coolant system. Thanks again!

    • michaelovitch
      michaelovitch In reply to Spixy cat

      @Spixy cat

      Carburator engine on this one.
      It's a good idea to get water pressure monitored.
      If you loose one bar or more of pressure ,the coolant coolant temp will increase very rapidly ,yes ,that's not good.
      1 bar allow you 25°C more than the normal boiling point at ambient pressure,and the glycol concentration increases it also.
