In the first of the two demonstration tests, a used 2016 Kia Sorento, a midsize SUV, and a 2018 Kia Forte, a small car, collided with each other. In the second test, a used 2015 Toyota Avalon, a large car, was paired with a 2018 Toyota Yaris iA, a minicar. Both the Sorento and the Avalon are among the IIHS Best Choices for teens. The Forte and the Yaris iA have good ratings in the five IIHS tests relevant to driver protection, and the Forte is a 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ winner.

The problem is the car compatibility, because vehicles do not collide in the absorption zones designed to absorb shocks, which means that the light vehicle is at a disadvantage. Here in Europe, Euro NCAP is developing a new test procedure : « Incremental improvements in vehicle structural design can deliver a more crash-compatible vehicle fleet. Work has started on the development of a new moving progressive deformable barrier (MPDB) test that is scheduled to replace the existing 64kph ODB static barrier test in the program by 2020. Based on an in-depth study of frontal offset crashes in Europe, a revised barrier configuration (1400 kg), barrier face build specification and the test trolley design have been agreed. Euro NCAP plans to upgrade the driver and passenger dummy specification to the advanced THOR-M dummy and is currently reviewing the dummy hardware specification, its calibration procedures and the injury criteria proposed by NHTSA. Finally, a metric for vehicle compatibility applied to the results of this test is also being developed. »

A corolla would have been more appropriate with the Avalon since it’s Toyota’s own structure rather than Mazda’s
