Would you believe it's been TWENTY years since the third generation Suzuki Jimny first entered the motoring world. It was clear when I tested it two years ago it was due an overhaul - say hello to the fourth generation.

The new Jimny may have a retro look to it, but it's all new and in fact has had quite a few changes to make it even better. These include the new styling, a new engine, new safety features, a new interior and more technology, but it is worth the wait? Find out here.

Thank you everyone that has watched the video so far, I'm really pleased with the positive comments and the amount of views this video has received. Following a lot of feedback, a dedicated off-road video has now been published, and can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=diWZN6GsQTQ

For the top speed, it will probably go faster than 90 mph. I have driven the old 86hp on the autobahn with 165kmh, which is around 102mph.

Like you said, it's an off roader, personally I don't have any reason to even go above 90 clicks an hour....anyways I am not happy that we can't even purchase them across the pond, because I'd buy it in a heart beat!

Hello Ian, thanks for watching. If you go with as little equipment, it's the same weight as the previous model (1,090kg), but when the car is spec'd with options, it weighs 1,135kg.

I don't hate the previous Jimny, it just wasn't as good a road car as this one. Mind you, that's not the main priority of the Jimny, of course. Thanks for watching.

+Car Obsession It isn't exactly about the power itself, a lot of Americans buy thing's off numbers. It is why cars like the Toyota 86 here in the States is looked down on from a lot of people because it's 200hp is considered nothing, when put next to other similar cars. Even though I think its a amazing car. It is why we have a few crazy cars like the Demon, and the TrackHawk Maybe its because we like straight lines here idk. Also thanks for the response.

Hi Brutal Fates, thanks for watching, but I feel I need to ask this question - why would it 'need' close to 200hp? I can't warrant the need for a Jimny to have that much power, especially as it weighs about the same as a packet of crisps.

I am completely in love with this car. Would you switch a 2006 Grand Vitara with the 2019 Jimny? Because that is my current car and even tho I have to drive through off road routes I am afraid that the road experience isn't that good, specially in roads with a lot of curves

    • Bryan
Bryan In reply to Jose Pablo Roman Solano.

It's more of what you want/need, the Vitara 2006 is more the average suv for commuting, traveling with family or friends and hosing around, the jimny will let you take a passenger (and maybe 2 small people) but it's off-road capability is another level, plus you can expect a lot of mods to come

The guy taking you around that off-road course should have told you not to put your thumbs inside the steering wheel if you want to keep them.

    • RoadRunnerLaser
      RoadRunnerLaser In reply to RoadRunnerLaser

Car Obsession - I think the slower steering might be a bit of an advantage, to be honest. Our G-Vit is the short wheelbase and it requires constant attention to keep it in a straight line. If anything, it's a little too twitchy, although I think I'm probably used to it now. If the steering in the Jimny were sharp, it could be a little exhausting on long road-trips. I've not driven a Jimny, old or new, so I can only really go by how our G-Vit drives and it's certainly not the kind of car in which it would be easy to fall asleep at the wheel. It's not a relaxing drive by any stretch of the imagination.

    • Car Obsession
Car Obsession In reply to RoadRunnerLaser

Oh no, I knew what you meant by the understeer, but like you suggest, the slower steering meant for me it wasn't quite as noticeable. I actually think the new Jimny handles alright to be fair, considering the type of car it is. It's noticeably better than the last one in that area, I'll tell you that for nothing!

    • RoadRunnerLaser
      RoadRunnerLaser In reply to RoadRunnerLaser

Car Obsession - By "understeer", I mean the tendency for the front wheels to take a wider curve than their angle would otherwise dictate. Perhaps with the slower steering, it might not have been quite so noticeable when driving off-road because the new Jimny is known to be a bit sloppy anyway. If you look at the footage from your side-mounted go-pro, you'll see it in action, though. I'll look forward to seeing you take the Subaru off-road. The first 4WD I ever drove was an old Subaru. It was more of an on-road hatchback than an off-road 4x4 but as long as the ground wasn't too lumpy, it was fairly capable.

    • Car Obsession
Car Obsession In reply to RoadRunnerLaser

In regards to the understeer, yes, as I'm sure you know, the Jimny has a slower steering rack, so driving it off-road (or indeed trying to park it) requires more steering effort than your normal car, so that takes getting used to. However, it has power steering of course, so it's not exactly a hardship.

In regards to greenlaning, yes, I wouldn't mind doing a bit more - in fact I'm testing a Subaru XV in March and I'd like to find somewhere suitable where I can take that off road.

    • RoadRunnerLaser
      RoadRunnerLaser In reply to RoadRunnerLaser

Car Obsession - I agree. Not the toughest of courses. I guess that they wanted a course where a complete novice could get a taster without too much risk. I've had to come back and rescue a Freelander on a far less challenging run - It was just a grassy hill - and I was on road-tyres, too.
One of my favourite things off-road is 4L steep descents, just allowing the car to crawl its way along under complete control whilst feeling like if it weren't for the seatbelts, I'd have my nose pressed up against the inside of the windscreen. ;)
I think you did an admirable job of covering that course - You weren't chewing up the ground by spinning your wheels everywhere - So many people who aren't used to off-road driving are way too heavy with the right-foot. They feel the wheels slip and think that the way to gain more forward momentum is to open the throttle. Then they wonder how they've managed to dig themselves into a hole.
Most of my off-road excursions involve pulling a trailer (because I am carrying equipment out to our operational area - I'm a qualified UAV pilot) and my colleague (with a Freelander) once had to ask me to pull his caravan out of a muddy field. His daughter was there at the time and as I was unhitching, she said that she was disappointed that I wasn't spitting mud everywhere - I told her that if she'd wanted me to, all she had to do was say so, and stand behind the car. ;)
Did you notice how, when in 4WD, there was quite a lot of understeer? If you didn't feel it on the drive, you can see it in the footage. That can be a little disconcerting if you're not used to it - It's because there is no centre diff and the wheels will slip. If they don't slip, you will wind up your transmission and that can be expensive when something lets go, usually with a loud bang.
It sounds like you enjoyed your spin around that course - Do you think you've caught the green-lane bug, now?
