Your UK motorcycle tests are quite hard compared to ours in the US - Hats off to UK riders!

@The Future I'm in Wisconsin which has no lane splitting but I ride mostly for leisure and rurally where traffic isn't an issue. I toured Spain in 2015 and it would freak me out at traffic lights when other bikes would suddenly ride up right next to me to wait out the signal. I rode a bike in London in the seventies for a couple of years and actually grew up in Ireland. Back then half the country was riding on a "provisional" license and things were pretty lax. London was awesome and I loved living in England. Take care and stay safe - Cheers!

I'm presuming you've seen the Mod 1 video! (the first part of the test)
Based on the few vids I've seen of the test in the US that's for sure haha, not even comparable.
I'd say that the general standard of riding from bikers here shows that, even when it's usually twice the speed limit lol.
I really wish they'd change the filtering (lane splitting) law there to more states for your sake, it's only CA and a few others that are allowed right? That's like one of the main perks of having a bike.

takes me back....i didnt mind my mod 1 and 2. I'd heard horror stories but the reality is the test makes for better riders in my oppinion. I still ride now and enjoy it. Your video is great btw, informative and decent. I think some people panic because of the formality of it all and the pressure. Just relax into it is my best advice and think of it as your going for a bike ride.

The Future In reply to Rich Purslow

Definitely, I feel even the more nonsensical stuff (i.e U-turn without putting your foot down within a narrow width to not fail) even a has a purpose.
It prevents people getting a licence off the whim, getting a fast bike and killing themselves the next week.

this your bike or do you use the bike at the test centre? Im looking to do my mod 1 and mod 2 but unsure if i need to take a bike?

    • The Future
The Future In reply to Our Father

@Our Father You can use your own bike (considering it's the correct category for the test - if a friend / someone with the correct licences rides it in - or you get it towed etc), or borrow a friend's bike, or use a school / instructors bike. And of course you can rider bigger bikes outside the test for practising but only with an approved instructor

Dude, you stopped way too far ahead, you're basically causing congestion, 1 car is more than enough, half a car if it's busy, if you get hit, you're insured...

    • The Future
The Future In reply to Slickdize

The GoPro makes everything look further away than in reality (answered this in my other video https://youtu.be/vG_rzOJIXlc?list=PLhSEwQBZQJww7TNRadlJX7aSzy7SybmUY&t=112 )
But yes completely agree with you, the distances when stopped are completely unrealistic (like most of DVSA teachings). Imagine if everyone followed that in traffic...would be completely gridlocked.

@The Future It was on an MT-07 and I don't think the Merc was going full throttle. We were basically side by side but the two lanes merged so someone had to speed up. Was still within the speed limit.

Only independent rydon Part are the road signs and instructions clear to see and understand as I don't know the area that are riding in it is Uxbridge and I'm worried about getting lost does that go against you

    • The Future
The Future In reply to Stephen Carter

Just like any other town yes they're clear to see, if you're observant and quick to interpret them you'll have no problem. Getting lost or going the wrong way doesn't mean you'll fail / get a major, you can always turn back or correct yourself or the examiner will guide you to to right direction (you'll only get minors for this, not a major - unless it's too many in the same category)

when you pulled out at 8:00 I did similar on my training and got told I shouldn't go so far over to the right as if someone cuts the corner you're a goner. You also pulled out quite far before you begin turning, I also do this (being a car driver) but I was told to set off around 45 degrees from the junction as it's safer. Just some tips from my instructor.

    • The Future
The Future In reply to Roy May

Fully agree with that first point. Completely against lane positioning that DVSA teach, (along with half the other bs stuff!) as it puts you in compromising situations. Most bikers will agree with me that the best policy is (in most cases) is a central dominant, visible, position, including during non-dedicated lane turns and dissuades reckless overtaking.
Unfortunately most examiners will mark you down for lane positioning that does not follow the standard lane 1, 2, 3 position I mentioned apart from the exceptions such as when using dedicated lanes, or turning right on large roundabouts etc.

Will do when it goes out of date, I've recently checked and there are no changes from everything described that will effect their test.
I've put it as 2019 so people know the info is up to date, as there are a few really old ones.

I would say mostly alright. The most important part of the test is the independent part of the test ; Unfortunately, you have not given enough information on this, and can result in a fail. More so , if you are taking your test in a area which you do not know at all. Not fair really, not everyone has a sat nav.

    • Alex2900
Alex2900 In reply to KOBI KI

They check how good you are at riding not reading the signs. Just ride cautiously and all should be good. I got my mod 2 in a area I do not know on Thursday but as long as you stick to the rules and do the checks you should be fine.

lord muck No, that’s what the Mod 1’s for! And if you are for whatever reason asked to do a U turn / turn around in your Mod 2 you can it your way i.e 3 point turn, putting your foot down within reason. Also of course you might need to do a real life emergency stop so don’t count that out 😂
