Here's my 2004 Ford Crown Victoria. Current mods include: aluminum driveshaft, 3.73 gears, full posi differential, Mercury Marauder airbox, 80mm MAF, '04 PI zip tube, ported and polished intake plenum and throttle body, 91 octane tune. This is my 4th best run so far after a 15.07, 15.09, 15.14.

Yeah, they also have duel exaust and calibrated transmission for higher top speed than civvy models as well as heavy duty suspension and bullet proof doors, otherwise yeah all is same.

+Aspie Otaku Or you could just pay a little more and get a non-beat P73 (base) civilian model like I did.  Better shape, way less miles, and for the same "couple gs" you spent fixing the P71, you can actually upgrade the P73!  I was running 14s before I traded in mine.

+PantherP74 Well if you have the money fix them its worth it! The repairs are actually pretty damn cheap it just takes playing catch up on maintenence and buying new parts ahead of time! Most common issue is tranny issues add some nonslip save up a couple gs just in case maybe do a filter and fluid change if that doesn't remedy it just baby it for afew months then take it to a tranny shop for a swap or rebuild and voila no more issues for a long long time.Only major repairs mine needs is a heater core harmonic balancer wore out but it was old and rusty had it replaced for 400 bucks shes still running fine at 192k miles.Bypassed the heatercore cheap easy fix until I change it later this summer. Next repair is the valve cover gasket replacement since spark plugs had to be changed and in cylindar1 and 5 the plugs were covered in oil its about that time.Maybe im just lucky and on top of things?Or I got one that wasn't abused as much except for maybe long idle hours.

Look up, Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. The idle is set up 40 RPM's, they added an oil cooler, heavier built body and frame, (which all of this actually makes the car heavier) they changed the transmission shift points to be more aggressive, stiffer suspension, but still has the same SOHC 4.6 V8 that still produces 250hp. It's not supercharged or highly tuned, and it has optional rear end gearing. One for highway, one city.

MCN In reply to zero to 60 in 6 seconds

no, your wrong. 250 horsepower was the maximum that ever came factory in any crown victoria. The only factory panther platform car that came with more was the marauder 4 valve engine at 302 horsepower.

+PantherP74 Actually if you look at the AMP output of a crown victoria alternator vs RPM graph, it only produces around 15 amps of power at 550 engine rpm(1600 alternator). Thats only 210 watts of power@14 volts dc.

The headlights alone use 50 watts each, add some strobes, the police radio and computer and you're well over that output. The battery can supply the remaining power for a given time, but as we know, police idle for hours sometimes.

The extra 40 rpms would at minimum jump the amps to 25 = 350 watts power at idle which is more reasonable. This is all if the 40 rpm thing is true however, haha.

    • PantherP74
PantherP74 In reply to zero to 60 in 6 seconds

Okay, some of what you said is true.

Why would the idle be set up 40 RPM?  40 RPM is not going to make any difference whatsoever.  They had a higher-capacity alternator to handle the extra electrical load.

The body and frame is exactly the same.

Yes, the suspension was a bit stiffer than civilian models, however the LX Sport model actually had larger swaybars than the P71.

Why did cop cars have aliumlnuam d shafts. ?

    • charlie dee
charlie dee In reply to Tim Jones

The aluminum shaft is better balanced then the steel one. It has to do with the rpm's of the d shaft. The lower geared P71's d shaft spins at a higher rpm for any given speed then a normal crown vic with 2.73 gears. This causes a harmonic imbalance in the drivetrain in some cars, the CV being one of them. The P71 with 3.27 gears have the top end limited to 140 mph and one equipped with 3.55 gears is limited to 120. Also being lighter by about 9lbs also makes it easier to balance.

    • zero to 60 in 6 seconds
zero to 60 in 6 seconds In reply to Tim Jones

Tim, it's because aluminum should be a bit lighter. The engine isn't powerful enough to handle a metal/steel driveshaft. Its bad enough Ford put heavier suspension and a heavier built frame under them, and then didn't add power to compensate:only had two rear end gear options. .
