Does the electronic shutter reduce raw depth (bit)?
Like on old g7 and g80 where goes to 12bit to 10bit iirc with EC or EFC mode.

What lens did you use to for the A7III and G9 for the IBIS test?

Also, why the Leicas vs the constant 2.8 lenses from Panasonic?

Sony FE 28mm F2 on Sony and Panasonic 7-14mm F4 on the G9.

Hi! Me again. Seeing as how I can't afford a Panaleica after recently buying the G9 (and the fact that I already own the 12-40 2.8), I was wondering if you could give me you opinion on a more affordable (if slower, obviously) long lens for wildlife. I'd like to have 400mm Eqv. Or over, and keep it under $500 (as wildlife is not a money earner for me, therefore I can't justify the extra expense).

Also, is the 40-150 variable aperture from Olympus decent enough?

      Cheers!

      Thank you!

100-300 Panasonic is probably the best budget option in that case. I haven't tested Olympus 40-150, so I unfortunately can't tell you that.

I thought you should know that your content regarding the G9 has played a huge role in me getting the camera. I bought it last week as an update to my GX85. I needed the extra assurance offered by weather sealing and dual card slots, for work. You've provided me with extremely detailed information that was vital to making the right choice: do I stay with M43, or move to Fuji? In the end, glass won as I have invested in M43 glass over the years. I thought about switching to APS-C and the X-H1 had what I needed. But at $1500 with a kit lens, it's $500 over what I paid for my G9, and I already have good glass for it. Your content made me realize that there's more to photography than a picture with slightly less noise, particularly when shooting hybrid and on a budget. Sorry for the long post. Just wanted to say THANK YOU.

I love your videos, do you still prefer the G9 to X-T3? I have the G9 but I think to sell it to buy the X-T3 to make wedding photos, do you think the change is worth it? I would win a lot in quality and especially in low light? I can not buy FF the right lenses being too expensive! Thank you for your valuable feedback!

Buying A7 III kit might actually be cheaper and X-T3 because of the lens options like 28-75mm Tamron or Sony 85mm F1.8, so for weddings I would probably go with A7 III. X-T3 has no IBIS, which is a significant downside.

Excellent review and thanks for doing a 1-year in experience.

As an Olympus shooter I am extremely impressed by the ergonomics of the G9. I love the ergonomics of the E-M1 Mk II but the G9 is even better in the hand, perfect size and with lots of actual, real controls that are missing on most cameras no a days (AF choice switch etc). Not to mention the menus and the touch interface, Olympus, come on, take notes! (Well actually all other companies should take note). The only thing holding me back from adding the G9 as a second body to my m43 is the fact that part from the lovely PL 25/1.4 I have only Olympus Pro-line lenses from 12mm to 300mm and while I believe S-AF is still very fast with those, I am very sceptical to the C-AF which is already struggling on the G9 with Panasonics on DFD lenses for fast action (birding, wild life and sports). On the other hand, C-AF is struggling on all m43 cameras still, even with PDAF so... :)

Have you had the chance to try any Olympus lenses with the G9?

      Regards

      Rasmus

Thank you, it is indeed great in terms of ergonomy. Panasonic lenses indeed work better on Panasonic cameras and Olympus lenses work better on Olympus cameras. I haven't had opportunity to try Olympus lenses on the G9, but I intend to do so in the future.

I have g80 and recently got good few lenses. I only really shoot video for my own enjoyment. Found a good deal on g9 with the 12-60 kit (the better one) and now I am considering the move to this model instead of gh5. But is it the right move, investing in g9 purely for the video (given a bargain I got on it)?

Depends on whether you intend to use advanced features such as 4K DCI, 10-Bit recording, V-Log and unlimited recording. For video only I would probably still get the GH5.

+The Hybrid Shooter thanks I think I need to try anyway. The G9 came out like a year after GH5 so I cannot believe that their claims of putting in record limits was really due to preventing overheating.. I think they did that to block cannibalization of the GH5 with that 10min 4K60 limit and due to the EU camcorder tax for the 30min limit. Which is why I think the US/Jap/German version has no 30min limit anymore in service mode.. wish me luck? I just want better AF, better IBIS and better controls and the cheaper price now at around 1000€ second hand (due discounts since too few people wants to buy it for video due to those record length limits) is a nice thing too.

    • The Hybrid Shooter
The Hybrid Shooter In reply to Charbax

+Charbax Yes, I have tried it, it only changes 4K60p limit to 30 minutes on my version bought in Europe. There is a possibility that you will "brick" the camera if you use it in service mode. It also rests your settings when you exit service mode. If something happens while your camera is in permanent service mode, the warranty is void.

    • Charbax
      Charbax In reply to Charbax

+The Hybrid Shooter what if Panasonic put the 10min limit only to not cannibalize sales of GH5, and what if the 30min limit on EU/PAL devices is only due to Panasonic wanting to save about $50-100 on that EU camcorder tax (which I think expired on January 1st 2019 anyway for any new camera sold, why the a6400 for example comes with unlimited recording), again not an overheating concern neither. Why the service mode on German/US/Japan based G9 devices unlock truely unlimited 4K60/30/24 and unlimited 1080p recording while the EU/PAL service mode still stays locked to 29.59 minute limit. Why I am now looking to buy a German/US or Japanese version of the G9 camera to use in that unlimited 4K60 service mode. I really need unlimited recording and the IBIS, AF and controls/design in G9 just seems better than GH5.

+The Hybrid Shooter have you tried filming 4K60 unlimited with it? Are you sure that it's not safe? It might overheat? Does it void the warranty?
