[Watch In High Definition]

Here's a compilation taken over the course of the beginning of the year featuring the two Caltrans-Owned (CDTX) Dash8-32BWH locomotives running for Amtrak California. Formerly AMTK 501 & 502, now CDTX 2051 & 2052.

These two classy looking locomotives are nearing the end of their careers with the commuter agency. Simply on borrowed time.
They've been running quite a bit so far this year however, so I've tried to document them the best I can.
You'll see them at several locations in the East Bay in the California Bay Area.
Both locomotives sport very nice K5LA horns.
Enjoy the following:

#1- CDTX 2052 East - Amtrak Train 718 - Knightsen, Ca
#2- CDTX 2051 East - Amtrak Train 710 - Pinole, Ca
#3- CDTX 2052 East - Amtrak Train 719 Yard Move - Oakland, Ca

The P32-8BWH is a passenger geared version of the Dash8. Amtrak ordered them while GE worked on the Genesis. With slight differences mechanically, the P32-8 and the B40-8 are essentially the same.

Fun fact: 2015 and 2052 were actually purchased by CalTrans as 501/502 from the start. They were always AmCal units (had a small CalTrans logo on them) but to cut the costs down they were delivered in the Pepsi can scheme.

The Dash 8s aren't going anywhere, the only reason they are getting those new charger units is so they can be used as backup units when both the Dash 8s and the F59s are in for servicing.

I imagen that rule applys to all Amtrak F59's.
If the red market lights are bright enough at night, why Amtrak doen't change all in the F59's?

      510trackside In reply to manuels89

Thanks - The F59's have to have the headlights on in push mode as the FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) decided that the red marker lights on the locomotives aren't bright enough at night.

Dash8's have been running on Amtrak since the early 1980's & the P42's since the mid 1990's. My favorite Amtrak engines are the P42's, the SDP40F's which ran great on the Santa FE with almost no problems.

Doubt CalTrans will give them the axe when the Chargers arrive. They're more likely to give the F59s the boot first when the Dash 8s are actually able to perform switching duties and have near-identical hardware to the Geneses. Not to mention the potential to be sent for rebuilding exists since Amtrak's undertaking the initiative currently.

The F59's aren't going anywhere ... the whole reason CalTrans got the Chargers was so that they could replace the need for P42's on the state trains. They won't have P42's on the capitols / San Joaquin's anymore effective in a few weeks.

      Thanks, appreciate it.
The white and blue locomotives behind the first one in some of the clips are a NPCU (Non-Powered Control Unit) which was once a locomotive that no longer has an actual engine it is. You'll notice the door on the side. It basically has all of the controls but has a converted space used for passenger baggage and bikes.

The only locomotive providing power (When the Dash8's aren't on there) is the trailing locomotive on the end of the train.
      Hope this helps.
