Bit more for the enthusiasts - its quad cam V6 and does not have the Rover K4 engine issue (gasket blowing especially on the 1.8 turbo) - totally different engine. The best mods are cold air induction BMC / ITG or Viper (forget K&N rubbish), cat back exhaust and reset the ECU. make sure to clean the VIS motors (or replace for £10) as these can get oily and the extra VTEC valve gates dont open effectively - if you dont get a surge at 3000 revs they need doing. These you can do DIY without any special tools and get another 12 HP and a lot more torque / free spinning engine.

The car can be chipped but its expensive and the programme isn't common so some places will say they have it and then cock it up with a generic setting. Ditto there are camshaft replacements but really MGR spent a lot of time optimising these and in my experience most cammed engines have flat spots and running issues for the sake of a bit more top end? No thanks. A specialist can fit a super charger (very expensive) and the car is designed for 250 BHP so no need to change the clutch etc. On the XPower forums we had a lightend flywell and a de-cat for a while - both add a buzz but you lose first gear with the former and your MAF light on the latter.

Or you could get an old Rover 620 ti and take the Turbo engine out of this - it fits in a ZS bay and can make 300 BHP with modifications. Someone has done this already so you might find it on the web.

If you go the mental route I would change all the brakes for Honda Type R with green stuff (or similar pads) as I get brake fade after 10 minute sprints on 190 HP. The suspension is a little jolty and something Bilstein would help - again a specialist might be able to improve this with some testing. And opne the blanking plates on the wing gills - it gets hot under the bonnet - sorry Mk1 owners - you dont have these do you ? (wink)

Well it isn't being driven on the cams in the video - engine is set up to rush at 3000 revs (feels almost like a turbo charger coming in) under this its none vtec and a little pedestrian for a V6. With the cat back and a full cold air BMC you get around 190 / 192 but the real difference is in the breathing - the car is really transformed with these two mods. Other thing is the chassis / handling - its front wheel drive and a Honda Accord Type R underneath (all be it from the 90's design). This model was designed by MGR with the help of both Honda who provided the basic car and Pro Drive who set up the suspension, wheels, brakes, body kit. This is why when MG went bust, the Asian buyers SAIT never produced a ZS in China - they did release a ZR and ZT immediately but could not work on this model as they had no ownership. So its getting rarer by the day - and it was already a pretty rare hybred at the time with only 3000 ish produced and many written off a decade later. here is mine in Guernsey 2016: http://www.bluemoondesign.co.uk/mg2016/11.jpg

Great car, cheap to buy and easy to work on - use Honda parts these days (better and more widely available).

+Matthew Cowdrey they are not amazingly fast but they are fwd so having 180hp in a fwd car is plenty really. it feels quick enough but these cars are better suited for twisty roads :)
