6 Things you didn’t know about the MK2 Audi TT - 2014

1) The battery is located in the hatch, underneath the cargo tray
If you looked under the hood of your Audi TT and saw this big empty space, you might be scratching your head, wondering where the battery has gone.

It is actually located in the rear passenger side of the hatch.
If you need to jump your battery, you don’t have to access it through the rear though. Under the hood is a Positive leave from the battery and a ground. Connect your jumper cables right here.

2) There is no spare tire
Audi did not include a spare tire in the first and second gen TT for weight savings. You can add your own but you’ll need a low profile donut with the appropriate uninflated tire mounted. Together that will set you back around $600 or so.
The 3rd and current gen TT, does have a spare! Hoorah! 2015-2018

3) Automatic headlight washer nozzles
If you were wondering where that other spray came from when using your windshield fluid, that would be the nozzles spraying your headlights.
If you don’t want wiper fluid to coat your headlights and the entire hood in the process, then don’t use the Auto mode for your headlights. Use the On position and the fluid will not spray the headlights.
Speaking of the Auto option, the daytime running lights do not turn off when using auto, so don’t leave your car in that mode unless you want a dead battery when you return.

4) Sport Mode
If you were wondering what the letter S is for on your shifter, that is Sport mode. The car will hit its maximum safe RPMs in each gear.

5) Highway Fuel Efficiency
This TT is rated at 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway - Surprisingly, those numbers are usually spot on. But, on long highway trips you can get significantly a higher MPG. My highest avg highway is 40 MPG

5-2) Quattro
The TT is not AWD all the time. Only when the car detects 15 or more degrees of slip, will power be sent to the rear wheels. Don’t think you will be able to get out of that snow unless you start drifting first

There you have it. 5 things you didn’t know about the MK2 Audi TT. Have any questions or comments? Leave them below.

One thing you will probably know after a while: You may turn the parking lights on with your knee leaving the car as it is quite narrow inside. Happened to me ( and I'm not American) until I learned to be careful.

The car is mostly FWD but the rear wheels engage whenever slip is detected on the rear wheels.. not as you said. Additionally, the DRL's will shut off automatically, even when not in auto mode.

I usually get around 30-34 on long trips, but that one time I filled up with 93 and was on a highway, with no traffic for about 50 or so miles. I had set the cruise control at around 75-80 and cruised. It was the only time I hit an average that high.

      1. the place that the battery is supposed to be in is actually reserved for the tt with manual transmission. Those cars need a master and slave cylinder to engage and disengage the clutch.
      2. This car does not use quattro. Although it may be called quattro, it actually uses an haldex system that is used in VW vehicles. True quattro sends about 80% of the power to the rear wheels when needed which Haldex cannot do.

    • No you
No you In reply to Ben Zhu

audi uses haldex in multiple cars, not just tt. while youre right that torsen can do up to 80% power to the rear wheels haldex is 50/50 and the gen4 used in the mk2 TT is shown to actually be better and faster than torsen which is outdated.

If you leave the DRL on in automatic mode, it will NOT stay on all the time and kill the battery. That's just stupid. They turn off automatically after about 30 seconds once the key is removed or alarm is set.

Cars & Tech by JDM City I'm gonna keep it relatively stock, which might be hard lol. I'm thinking just an integrated engineering stage 1 tune, ttrs wheels (mine came with kind of curbed avant garde's), ttrs exhaust, mss adjustable springs and poly bushings bits as they go. But I'm in no rush lol, this is a daily for me

Tanner Conley I'll be holding off on performance until my CPO Warranty runs out. Until then, I plan on having the car painted Samoa Orange and get RS4 wheels. This time I'm going for a modified OEM look. Not sure if I want to touch suspension yet. Then onto the usual mods and tune. How about you?

So I'm really considering purchasing a 13 TTs and I live in MT our winters get pretty brutal. I was told with proper snow tires this thing bombs through the snow. My brother has a B8 S4 and it's killer in the winter. What do you think about the snow performance? At this rate anything will be better than my RWD 335i. Also does this thing have an aux input?

    • Yogi P
Yogi P In reply to Karter Estill

it's actually pretty amazing in the snow - i live in Alberta and drive the car year round, outside of heavy snowfalls where clearance is an issue, the car handles better than most other cars on the road with a good set of winter tires. The quattro system will get you going on any road while the esc is clever and is monitoring everything you're doing, when you turn the wheel the car will make sure you make the turn by slowing down wheels to limit wheel slip. It's actually a pretty unique experience from other heavier cars with a less intuitive stability control. Just make sure you have a decent set of winters on and you'll be outperforming most vehicles on the road.

Karter Estill it drives decent in the snow as long as the snow isn't too high. I'm out in NY for reference. It's awd only when it needs to be. Also, there are different adapters that plug into the MMI system. Mine came with the iPod cable. You can swap it for an auxiliary plug.
