On July 30, 2011, I headed north From Colorado Springs to Palmer Lake, Colorado to do some railfanning. Needless to say it was not just any day of railfanning.

On this day, BNSF 4871 was leading the H-DENBEL, a priority freight from Denver to Belen, NM. Dispatch told the crew of the 4871 to cut off from the train, and pick up BNSF 9412, a SD70MAC on the Palmer Lake house tracks. In order for them to pick up the 9412, the 4871 had to hook up to it nose to nose, because this was a one way in track with the switch facing north. The next forward facing unit, BNSF 672 would cut away from the 9412, and 4871 and become the new leader. The 9412 and 4871 reversed out of the house tracks to hook up to the new leader now parked on the main track.

All in all this was a simple power grab, and all this was performed in roughly 2 hours.

For all the effort and time you railfans put into your hobby, for God's sake spend $1.50 and buy a windshield for your damned mic. You guys ought to know better, just plain dumb or cheap.

according to srats who was there that day 4371 is bad order the computer is burned out so they will have to grab 9412 shuffle the engines then reconnect to the train and set 4371 out at Belen for servicing.

Aspect ratio messed up? What do you mean? It looks perfect... fits the screen with no black bars anywhere. I wish I could get my videos looking that nice without the darn black bars.

How come dash 9's need 4 locos to pull around 600m of heavy freight? Here in Australia we have NR class's that pull with 2 locos and 1.5km of heavies. Is it because they need the pulling power for the hills or?

you need 4+ loco's to haul over mount lofty so your nr's must be out on the flats

This is in Colorado where there are steep mountain grades. In this particular location the elevation is some 7000 feet above sea level. Internal combustion engines put out less power than they do at lower elevations.
