This is a critical market for automakers and an increasing numbers of consumers. As Car Confections points out so well, price and features as well as warranty are exactly what the well informed buyers in this segment are valuing. Great clear comparison...AGAIN.

Toyota RAV4. Honda CRV has terrible CVT transmission and terrible Turbo engine. Who's stupid enough to buy CRV???

Love the split-screen while doing the comparison. Haven't seen anyone else do that and it's really the best way (at least for me) to be able to compare the two vehicles. Thanks so much for a great review!!!

Car Confections. Am viewing this from Australia. You did not make mention of the spare wheel. Do not know if in USA vehicles have the same items as in Aus. Here CRV comes with a full size spare wheel in all models but the RAV4 which here comes in 3 models the full size spare is available as an optional extra in the lower 2 models and not in the top model. What spare is available in the USA on both vehicles please. Would be interested to know. Thanks.

Of the two models we tested (both are loaded trims), they both had spare tires. I'm not sure if that varies by trim like you say it does in Australia

This was a very good comparison. When talking about storage however you fell short. What about glovebox, door, overhead and under the floor in the trunk. People buying these cars want to know what the storage is in these areas as well not just the center console. Also, more in depth driving characteristics, such as braking distances, wind noise, passing pwr at freeway speeds, rear visibility etc., would have helped too although this doesn't seem to be important to young drivers anymore.

Toyota is far ahead of Honda in terms of reliability noone comes close. Stay away from turbo engine and Hondas automatic transmission as it fails.

Identically equipped the RAV4 will be more expensive... BUT it IS the better vehicle overall and when you factor in it’s higher resale value, then it is by far the better buy! Not to mention Reliability, serviceability and cheaper cost of ownership due to Non-Turbo/Naturally aspirated Engine that runs regular grade fuel no problem... if you’re running a turbo in cold climates without using higher grade fuel and without proper warmup/cooldown operation (which hardly anyone does)... you will see more repairs & issues down the road with the turbo and direct injection.

Additionally, oil dilution is an issue in cold climates with turbos of any manufacturer due to overfueling (richer fuel mixture) by the electronic fuel mapping to help on the warm up process. Oil dilution (fuel in oil) will overpressurize the oil system putting more stress on the seals, due to too much fluid in the system. Hear me now, believe me later.

EPA estimates for MPG on the RAV has just been established at 30MPG Combined. It’s only a 1MPG advantage for the RAV over the CR-V but better nonetheless.

RAV4 should not have gotten 0.5 points for 19” wheels. Objectively, CR-V’s 18-inch wheels are better for daily driving. Wheels should be a draw to avoid controversy. And why no real-world MPG?

And RAV4 was getting points for little things; but CR-V wasn’t (ex. why not 0.25 points for capless gas on CR-V?)... Seems biased to get a win for the RAV... At any rate, since it is 2 years newer, RAV4 better be better.

Also, Honda should get points for simpler trims. Toyota is convoluted with its options. At least with Honda, when you check out the Touring, you know you’re getting all the goodies on offer. At Toyota, the top Limited trim ranges from lacking to loaded! ( not that the stupid dealers stock loaded models much 👎🏻)

Too bad Toyota only wants to sell white or grey RAV’s with black interior and few options. Here in So Cal, the top market, they don’t stock Toyota’s cool colors and features much. Shame, because an Adventure model in Blue Flame with Mocha interior sounds cool. Like the idea of a port-and-direct injection engine with an 8 speed auto.

Why would you buy like these premium trims for these kind of car? Ex for honda and se for toyota are more than enough. 35k and 37k dollars... I’d rather check the mazda cx9 or vw atlas for that kind of money. If the trim levels were lower like I mentioned, and 27-29k in real life out the door price I’d take the 19 Toyota rav4.
