Video today just explaining the ticking noise that many Chrysler/Dodge 3.5L V6 engines have (usually from 2006-2010). These engines are found in a bunch of different cars, like the Dodge Avenger, Dodge Nitro, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Challenger, Dodge Magnum, and Dodge Journey.

This noise is normally caused by the rocker arms. Under the intake manifold there are 2 rocker arm assemblies. These rocker arms are on a dowel, and over time the pin that keeps the rockers in place gets sheared or cut off. This shifts the dowel and the rocker arms are no longer properly aligned, so the oiling holes in the rocker arms are no longer in the proper spot, and therefore do not get the proper amounts of oil. This lack of oil to the arms causes the noise.

The fix is to replace both sides of the rocker arm assembly. I don’t have a detailed video of how to do this, but I’ll go over it briefly. You need to remove the upper intake manifold, remove the valve cover, remove the bolts and take off the rocker arm assembly, and replace it with the new one, putting the bolts back on with 31 foot pound of torque.

Hopefully this video helped you to recognize and/or learn about this common issues that affects Dodge and Chrysler vehicles. Thanks for watching!

I found out the easiest way to fix the problem is to buy a Toyota, this fixes the problem every time.

Or this is just a shitty engine to even start with. You shouldn’t hear any ticking they just kept it from being noise but still there and will come back

Mine is making noise the dealership suggest to replace camshaft, rocker arms, gasket, lifters. I saw damage to the camshaft being worn down. Another mechanic told me there was issues with the oil pump. Does anyone have damaged camshifts?

You need the rocker arms & shafts done. I heard no tick after the expensive out of pocket repair. Thankfully this POS ('06 Magnum SXT) finally died. Still looks good except for the drivers seat, a door molding and those cheap window sun nuked door beltlines.

Is this a common problem with the 2.7L V6’s too??

Robert Johnson In reply to Evan Dupuis

No because the rocker arm assembly is different than the 3.5/4.0 engines.

Good video. My friend has a 2010 journey with this v6 and issue. Its at 107kmi and sounding rough, Advised to trade it in while it still has no issues, and the work is still technically maintenance.

nick collier it’s expensive like around $1600..the rocker arm assembly updated parts are on eBay but they around $300 to $400 and you need 2 of them..I would buy them on eBay and find a independent shop to install them or find someone or a buddy that’s good with repairing vehicles

You have solved my problem. The Chrysler/Dodge dealership kept telling me they werent sure what it was....maybe transmission. My car is still under 100, 000 10 year warranty. It is still making the this ticking/tapping. I think it was probably sold to me with this ticking noise. This happened 1 year ago as the dealership rejected my concern and even thought it might be the transmission. I beleive they didnt want to fix it since it would of cost them money and lost of time. Look like I have fact now. Thanks. There should be a recall on these models and years. By the way mine is a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT 3.5 L 6 cyl

I have an 08' Nitro with 3.7, does same thing since almost new. Ticky when cold, warmed up mostly quiet unless in need of oil change. Mine now has 265,563 miles on original engine, but I run Mobil 1 Synthetic always and change oil every 6K. I also warm my vehicle up every time before driving it, year round. Occasionally a couple hundred miles before I change the oil I'll run an extra quart of 30HD(High Detergent) motor oil to clean everything up real good before draining. Seems to help the ticking be less once oil changed. Summer time I step up to 10W30 since the mileage has gotten so high, but cold weather I now run 5W30 Mobil 1.
