I got my sucky-sucky tool here: amzn.to/2H2xwit

On this VW Beetle I recently upgraded the front drum brakes to disc brakes after the dropped spindle upgrade (video of that to be uploaded soonish!) So it was necessary to bleed out the brakes. At the same time I flushed out all of the old dirty and rusty brake fluid for a clean install.

Delmont came to help. He got a dollar. Go Delmont!

What kind of brake disc roto is it or is it an original from the factory? I'm looking to upgrade my 74 but don't like EMPI on how it fitting

+VSAAPW This one I haven't driven yet, but the other ones I did before are working great! My Type-3 Fastback has the same brakes also, plus a rear disc kit that I upgraded to last spring, it also has been treating me right! Glad I could help, thanks for your questions!

+DuckmanCycles and VW Garage thanks for the link. Now I know where to get them. It's cheaper than EMPI and i like the way how they fit on the car, like it comes stock. Has it been working well for you? I had my flushed over the weekend and now experience with loose pressure. I might have to get it re flush again. Thx duckman

Its mostly OEM parts, except for the caliper brackets and the drop spindles. The EMPI kit is pretty much the same as anyone else's these days. Here's an IAP performance kit, its all the same stuff. Same with CB's kit. https://amzn.to/2PaBc6c

I flushed on my 74 and now don't have brake pressure. I verified that there are no bubbles. Do you have any suggestions on what it might be the issue?

Hmmm, check to make sure there are no leaks anywhere. If anything looks wet at all.... REPLACE IT! Usually when I dig into a VW brake system I just start replacing the wheel cylinders and master cylinder whether they appear to need it or not. For less than $100 you have brakes that work like new!

I do the one man gravity version of this. Pop the top off the MS, open one line at a time, let it drain until clear. Gets the air out and gravity feeds new fluid in the line. Takes longer but when you are alone its an easy option. Great vid man! Keep em coming!

DuckmanCycles and VW Garage In reply to Oper8or

That works pretty well to get things started I will admit, sometimes you might still have a little air in the line though between the drops. But you can't beat that as being a great lazy method! Thank you so much for the suggestion!

Yes, I believe only the Super Beetles used discs from the factory, but the Karmann Ghia came with discs, and those discs fit directly onto a standard Beetle. It was a very popular upgrade back in the day! 😀

I had a bug that looked half that bad. Got rid of it, bought a cute little 914. All it got was vandalized. Knowing what I know now, should of just kept the bug. Zombie Apocalypse and all.

Also I found when bleeding the brakes, unless you have a new master cylinder, never press it all the way down. With a less than new master cylinder, rust forms where the rubber seals don't slide under normal operation. Pressing the brake all the way down will abrade the seals. BTW my daily driver is a 1983 rx-7. POR-7 and underbody coating all the way

I can only imagine how much of an improvement that disk breaks are for the bug. How much are the disks ? Where do you like buying your parts for Volkswagens ? Thanks for taking the time and effort to make your videos !

    • DuckmanCycles and VW Garage
DuckmanCycles and VW Garage In reply to cody cheney

That depends... in the rain or if you're doing any kind of performance driving the difference from drums to discs is HUGE! Around town driving not too much noticeable difference on the front end, except that you don't have to adjust drum brakes a couple times a year. I am not a fan of making that adjustment at all! I upgraded my Type-3 to rear brakes to discs in another video. https://youtu.be/OcFfp3RfKp8 Now those made a tremendous difference over stock!

Lately I've been shopping for deals depending what I'm looking for, with no particular brand nor vendor loyalty. But I've been rather surprised what at the prices of I can get at the big AMZN with free shipping, a lot of the resellers/vendors on there are the same folks you would buy from anywhere else. I used a brake kit just like this one here: https://amzn.to/2JjRL0w for this video. They also give me a commission for the advertisement, I like that, and for the moment thats the only reason I send people there. LoL!

I appreciate your comment! I hope that helps! Thanks for your comment and questions!

Yes indeed! If we did some rear ones, too, the difference would be huge! But front ones are certainly a good upgrade! The stock drums do work quite well except when you're doing any performance driving or in the rain. But the big thing to me is no more regular adjusting of the drum brakes! I hate that process! Haha! Thanks for the comment, man! 😀😀😀😀

um you almost do it the way I do, but here's the way I do it, I have a hose like that, and it's in a bit of clean fluid in the jar. Attach the hose, (shorten it so it goes right to the bottle) then just open the nipple and pump hell out of the brakes. IF it sucks up anything, it sucks up fluid. However for what you're doin, flushing the lines, your system works well. I was doing it on a completely clean system so I didn't have to worry about that. That also makes it a one man job if you don't happen to have one of the vacuum things.
