The third-generation BMW X3 has a deep-seated connection with Australia that most people won’t realise. It’s bold new look is the handy work of Aussie designer and all-round nice guy Calvin Luk, who also penned the current X1 and 1 Series facelift.

Luk is a BMW fanboy from way back – from the very moment his parents bought an E36, and it’s been that way ever since. He’s also one of the youngest designers ever hired by the company, but he’s already achieved something of a career milestone when he penned the fabulous Z4 Concept, unveiled at Pebble Beach this year.

More impressive, still, he also won the right to design the production version of the new Z4 – a lifelong dream and something we’re told will remain true to the Concept. We’ll find out for ourselves in late 2018, when the car is likely to hit the streets.

Luk’s brief for the all-new X3 was simple; give it more character, more sportiness and more tech, without alienating the primary female buyer group – so far, responsible for more than 1.5 million sales globally. In Australia, it’s currently sitting on the number three spot on the SUV sales podium, behind the X5 and X1.

Amazing car and amazing landscape! I'll get mine in two weeks and it's always a pleasure to see a film with a BMW X3. Good job, thank you very much and greetings from Germany.

Nice review! I'd never buy an X3!..... never interested in that size suv until my friend from BMW took me for demo drive in X3 M40i! That spec rivals SQ5 & GLC 43. X3 M40i if you can stretch the budget this is the one. I also think BMW have the lead now with infortainment an general tech inside there vehicles...... Hey Tony another good review.... will see you in Queenstown this winter for the BMW Xdrive on ice?

This car is fucking joke. BMW are only making this to make money to fund there performance programs. It's"filler" car, like the filler in a hot dog.

Basically this X3 makes the X5 needless it is similar or even slightly bigger then the first X5 E53. But I definitely prefer the old built in the dash satnav, quite don't like the free standing screens no mater what the car is... but most importantly I wouldn't by SUV. Won't trade the look and handling of a limousine (or wagon if space is needed) for just 5-6 cm higher position. No thanks!

Test drove this and the new XC60. Ended up buying the XC60 over the X3. Both nice cars but XC60 felt more special.

8 sec 0-100 is too slow for a 2 litre turbo diesel in 2017/18.
      Still look dumpy and boxy.

The D5 has a twin turbocharger engine. The equivalent to this is the D4 with again a 2.0 Diesel, 190ps - which is a bit slower compared to the BMW. This is the entry level 2.0 Diesel.

Great Review. I think the new technology BMW have in their New Models are really cool.. leaps and bounds than the Merc.
Plus I love those drone shots. Well done! Adds that James Bond cinematic drama to it... More please.
