I did a project back in 2007 where me and a friend lambasted GM for killing the EV1. Today in 2017 however while the EV1 is missed, GM kind of redeemed itself with the brilliant Bolt, which I got a chance to drive a week ago.

the Volt is a turd, not made half as well as the EV1 and it's not even pure electric. GM is basically saying their customers, the car buying public are idiots and will accept whatever is shoved down their throats. They are in bed with big oil and alot of very corrupt and sadistic peoples.

Electricity doesn't come from the Electricity fairy. It takes natural resources from Coal, Oil, and Gas fired power plants to provide energy for these to charge. Solar power requires massive amounts of land and rare earth metals found only in countries like China, corrosive materials which cannot be incinerated or destroyed, and Wind farms damage natural wild life and require the same rare earth metals and batteries as solar. Nothing is emission free. It may be emission free from the tail pipe but much like the Prius and other Electric or Hybrids, their carbon foot print during manufacturing and after its life expectancy has been met is worse than conventional cars. Until we can find a way to completely remove corrosive materials or the need for rare earth materials we are damned either way. Strip mining is a hell of a lot worse than drilling.

    • Geoff Van Noty
Geoff Van Noty In reply to Kim Chi

Coal mines require large areas of land and the most efficient way to mine is to surface mine (World Coal Association).. Rare metals are used in gasoline engines, just look at spark plugs...iridium, copper, platinum... they don't come from rare metal fairies...

the person who made the desission to stop production and research into the EV1 is now cleaning toilets at McDonalds cause that was a REALLY STUPID mistake!! this was the late 1980s we are now 30 years further on, imagine 30 years of research and inventions put into this first generation electric car, america would now be dominating the electric car market and no one would even own a pruis!!! , the Ev1 was the first and only electric car on the road at the time!!!! General Motors KILLED IT TO SELL OIL not willing to take a step into the future but holding on the the old (trusted) fossil fuel engine car. we all know oil is becomming more rare and rare and will be at one point be gone! we need to think ahead not 10 or 20 years but 50-100 years and start now!! on a massive scale going away from fossil fuel engines to other types of fuel,

they make them ugly so stupid people don't buy it. a electric car costs so much like a gasoline car - when gasoline would cost 60 cents/ gallon. and it needs much less spare parts, no oil change, no new exhaust, no radiator, no spark plugs.

+benji888578 On a funny note isn't the gigafactory an old GM plant?

Also as much as I like Tesla's idea of selling directly to us instead of us having to go to a dealer ship, I really think he should look into partnering up with dealer ships that exclusively already sell electric cars.

You know though's small dealer ships that sell though's small EVs and maybe a few Leafs? Just think how huge-er (Tesla) would become if he made a partnership with them. Teslas would fly even faster off the line.

benji888578 In reply to Spencer Howard

People don't seem to see long-term effects, or think long-term, but, I saw this too, that is what happened. GM closed the plant for EV1 and within a month bought Hummer. They had their chance to be the leader in Electric Vehicles. Now Tesla is actually doing it...once gigafactory is up and running, and the less expensive model produced in larger numbers, that'll be the beginning of the end of ICE cars.

Now we have lithium batteries and they are improving all the time. If we would have keep working on this design while selling and leasing them where would we be today? Design and development costs paid. New designs with lithium batteries and lower mass production costs. A public that is accustomed to electric cars being the future not just a pipe dream. When the change does start, people with gas powered cars will feel a sense of living in the past and will want to move forward and join the class of people that are moving into the future. This car could have done that for GM and I see it as a great missed opportunity. Soon some one will build an affordable electric car for the common man and all other car makers will be playing catch up.
