We review the rare Ford Shelby GT350R. While it's still a Mustang, the car may finally unite German, Asian and American automotive enthusiasts. (BMW, Honda, Porsche, Chevy etc.)

After spending time on the track and on the street there is one thing that stood out about the GT350R, it was like knowing a loved one was on borrowed time, realizing it won't last long. High horsepower, high revving naturally aspirated V8 motors with a manual transmission are a dream these days, and soon to be a fairy tale. With emissions standards, fuel economy regulations the combo this car utilizes will be relegated to the exotic platforms soon.

My 1983 GT never squeaked or rattled, even with 230 k miles. Guess they don't make them like they used to. Of course, no longer making 175 hp Mustangs is probably a good thing.

I don’t get it, so we criticize it for not having more light weight performance orientation in mind. Then we complain that they put expensive carbon fiber wheels on it.

You whine about the "interior quality", but then you're also grateful for the price point. Pick one, you can't have both

+savagegeese Right, but the topic here is this Ford, not all Fords. My point is simply that, for a car at this level of performance, for $70k MSRP, it's unreasonable - even unfair - to expect a better interior. After all, this car's interior started life as a mid-level rental car, then Ford threw a bunch of amazing performance parts at it.

Ford accross the board has some of the worst interiors.

Bo McGillacutty This car feels how it should. I give it grace because of the panel gaps, cold engine ticking and other quirky road noises.

Complaining about the interior in a $65k car based on a $30k car that performs like a $120k-$200k car is....silly. I've said the same thing about the Corvette for years. You want more nice? Go spend $100k+ for a 911. And get blown off the road. Since this was made, as the non-R has the trans cooler there really isn't a reason to get the R.

Great video Savage! I love all your in depth coverage. For me this is my aspirational car and is out of my league as far as what I can afford. I love the high reving natural aspiration and sound of this truly beautiful incredible car. This would be my choice over even the gt500! Thanks again for the great video.

Most people cannot afford the insurance, let alone operating costs of this car. Tires alone could run 3k a summer. This is a 1% automobile.

All that engine work and Ford is not sure it will last this is a typical Ford product just build it and hope it works.
All that bullshit 4 cams guarantee the timing chains will fail it is a over engineer car to keep up with Chevy Camaro.

Back in the day, I was lucky enough to get rides in a 427 Shelby Cobra and a 427 fuel injected Corvette when they came out new.
The experience was hair-raising. Its been 50 yrs ago for me and I am lucky my hair is not still sticking straight up out of my head.
We were all running really hot cars in the latter half of the 60s, up to when they killed it in 1973. After that, you had to do it yourself.
All I can say is If you did not do it back then, the technology has allowed us to do it again. Go fast. Outrageously fast, but please realize that the original Shelby and Corvettes were about the price of a Cadillac then. The difference is that it was new then.

I'm glad you touched on all the quality issues and didn't just focus on the amazing performance/engine/sweet Tremec/that exhaust note and the killer looks as so many reviewers do. It's no secret the formula Ford used to bring a world class performer to market at this price, they cut corners/cost everywhere that does not affect performance. While the interior materials are very poor I do think the ergonomics are excellent as is the Sync 3 although I'm surprised you didn't mention the blasphemy of having "Sync" stamped into the bezel of the shiftier instead of "Tremec".
