As one of the best bargain electric cars on the market right now, you may be wondering how far can a Bolt EV go at highway speeds from a full charge?

In this video, I'll do a range test of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. WATCH the entire video, it was a CLOSE call...

Just a tip.. you may be better off drafting off some semis. That would likely save you more energy than just going slower.. especially being passed by semis.
You could try this pretty easy.
Go 65 or whatever the trucks do there..
Then pull in behind one.. 2-3 car lengths see what the trend bar does, or reset the data and see what it shows.
DEFINITELY make sure you still maintain a safe distance.. though.
But as an emergency measure it can save you a lot.
My MPG in my Prius goes up significantly when I do this.
But speed limit is 80 here and everyone goes 85-90.
So hanging out at 65 behind a semi is a pain in the butt, and significantly increases the travel time.. in Texas.
I would rather go 85 and spend a bit more on the gas.
But if the limits are 70-75 where you live it's not bad option.

Hello, did you have the AC on during the trip? I live in California and AC is a must when traveling around here.

It's about 5% from the info I have seen from News Coulums videos.

The AC was off, I imagine the range would take a hit if it was on.

I was told by a fellow bolt EV owner not to push beyond 180 miles on the highway. That's still plenty of distance though.

I think it comes down to where you are driving. But 180 miles is plenty for sure!

It was interesting to see your trend bar at highway speeds was typically even or high. I assume you do a lot of highway driving. Any time I get up to highway speeds in my 2019 LT my trend bar goes low. Obviously this is because I mostly do in-town driving but it's interesting to see the process in action.

Curious, after your run you said you would charge it to 100% with the dc fast charger. How long did that take?

Barry Kreider after 70, it was noticeably slower. From what I recall, 0-70 it was in the upper 40’s kWh. Then slowed gradually till 100%.

Nice. I wasn't sure how much it slowed down when getting toward 100%.@AvtoWowEV's

It took about an hour and half. Rate of charge of 40-45kw/h

Wow if you managed that range at 40 degF , a nice spring day of 65degF won't be a problem at all. Thank you for posting this. I also have a 2017 BOLT EV Premier, with 18,000+ miles. I haven't tried anything over 100 miles as yet, but after this video I am eager to hit the road for some long distance travel.

Thanks, as long as you can plan out your trips when going for long stretches, the Bolt will prove to have fairly good highway efficiency!

Close indeed! But a good example to recalculate and adjust speed as necessary to reach the fast charger on longer trips. I'll take anything over 200 miles at highway speeds in the Bolt, so good work!

Hey thanks! The Bolt surprised me. It is quite efficient! When it gets warmer (65-75 degrees), I'll have to do another test at 70-75mph instead of the 60-70mph in this test.
