World premiere: Mercedes-Benz Future Bus with CityPilot – a milestone on the way to the Mercedes Self Driving Bus / autonomous city bus, and a revolutionary mobility system for the future
• Mercedes Self Driving Bus CityPilot: a milestone on the way to autonomous driving in urban public transport
• Mercedes-Benz Future Bus: Mercedes Self Driving Bus spectacular technology platform with a trailblazing design
• Mercedes Self Driving Bus CityPilot: fascinating technology improves safety, efficiency and comfort
• Mercedes Self Driving Bus 20 km journey without steering, accelerating and without brake pedal
Stuttgart / Amsterdam – Megacities, traffic gridlock, environmental problems – the hot topics are the same on every continent. Under these circumstances, people's need for mobility to attend work and school and take recreation, cannot be met by private transport alone. Daimler as a mobility provider has a number of possible solutions. A major one is a range of buses including Mercedes Self Driving Bus, especially when used as a complete, individually coordinated transport system for urban environments. What urban public transport will look like in the future is shown by the semi-automated Mercedes Self Driving Bus with CityPilot – Mercedes Self Driving Bus operates even more safely, efficiently and comfortably than conventional buses. Mercedes Self Driving Bus Connectivity plus camera and radar systems with data fusion are catapulting the city bus into the future. Mercedes-Benz is showing this spectacular technology on an equally spectacular technology platform, the Mercedes-Benz Future Bus with CityPilot. Together they set a milestone, both in the history of the bus and on the way to autonomous and accident-free driving. Daimler is the leading manufacturer of vehicles with automated driving functions. With the Mercedes Self Driving Future Bus, Daimler Buses is now presenting its very specific idea of a Mercedes Self Driving Bus / city bus of tomorrow.
The Mercedes Self Driving Bus / Future Bus with CityPilot further enhances the attractiveness of the city bus as a means of transport. This above all applies to passengers, but also to drivers and bus operators. All three groups benefit from a revolutionary Mercedes Self Driving Bus design and trailblazing technology. The autonomous bus becomes one with its environment, both in terms of its exterior and interior design and of the technology employed as it moves along its dedicated line and communicates with its surroundings.
The technology of the Mercedes Self Driving Bus CityPilot in the Mercedes-Benz Future Bus is based on that of the autonomously driving Mercedes truck with Highway Pilot presented two years ago. Mercedes Self Driving Bus has however undergone substantial further development specifically for use in a city bus, with numerous added functions. The Mercedes Self Driving Bus CityPilot is able to recognize traffic lights, communicate with them and safely negotiate junctions controlled by them. Mercedes Self Driving Bus can also recognize obstacles, especially pedestrians on the road, and brake autonomously. Mercedes Self Driving Bus approaches bus stops automatically, where it opens and closes its doors. And not least, Mercedes Self Driving Bus is able to drive through tunnels.
Just under a dozen cameras scan the road and surroundings, while long and short-range radar systems constantly monitor the Mercedes Self Driving Bus route ahead. There is also a GPS system. Thanks to data fusion, all the data received create an extremely precise picture and allow the Mercedes Self Driving Bus to be positioned to within centimetres. This already works in practice, as demonstrated by the world premiere of the CityPilot on an exacting route covering almost 20 km, with a number of tight bends, tunnels, numerous bus stops and involving high speeds for a city bus.
This semi-automated Mercedes autonomous bus improves safety, as it relieves its driver's workload and nothing remains hidden from its cameras and radar systems.

The people who thought and designed this bus, obviously have never ridden or operated a mass transit bus.

As a bus driver in a major metropolitan area I can see how this is a good idea in the wealthiest parts of a city. However, most bus riders are those of lower income. These individuals barely follow the rules when a driver is present. They would tear these buses apart! How is fare going to be collected? How are rules going to be enforced (no smoking, eating, open containers, loud music, fighting, unwanted sexual advances, etc.) going to be monitored and dealt with swiftly? How are wheel chairs going to be loaded? I get asked by dozens of people a day for free rides and questions on schedule and bus routes. There are so many problems to overcome if a driver is taken away. I can see having a driver there for all these issues and having the bus automated for safety. I don't think that is the desired final result though.

The word autonomous is in the video title, but if you listen closely the speaker uses the word "semiautonomous", and a bus driver is featured throughout the footage. I don't think they will ever replace bus drivers, but they will vastly improve safety and efficiency.

The interior design is utter shit and i hope this never goes into mass production like this. I mean a bus is a means of mass transportation not a lounge or living room or whatever this is supposed to be. Like, has anyone involved in the design of this actually ever used a bus?!

Well, if buses have air conditioning and wifi and offer a smooth ride, I might use them more.

But when they are hot, smelly and the driver deliberatly drives like an idiot, I'm not even going to consider public transport!

Where I live bus drivers drive like lunatics. They brake hard, they take corners badly, they hop curbs, they cut people off, run red lights and even fail to stay stopped long enough for people to get on/ off.

Autonomous buses are the future. They will drive smothly, be careful and they won't break any rules.

Great presentation, and i wish buses would arrive in America sooner, than later.

However, the sad reality in America is that oil, car companies and corrupt politicians will do whatever it takes to delay the emergence of this technology for daily use.

This is why public transportation is inefficient and lacking in America. Those oil, car companies and corrupt politicians prefer to invest in city roads and highways to keep everyone driving in their cars.

The more people drive, the more their products are bought: cars and oil/fuel. Which in effect brings them maximum profit. And of course the dirty politicians get a nice "donation" for the campaigns and speeches.

Unfortunately this has been going on for decades and sees no slow down. The motto is always, Profits over People (at least in the USA).
