We've finally had a turn behind the wheel of one of this year's most anticipated new vehicles: the 2020 Toyota GR Supra. In this video, Carlos Lago gives his first impressions on what the Supra is like to drive on an open track. After that, we'll get into some of the details inside and out, including the areas Toyota left for the aftermarket to fix.

Toyota invited members of the press to Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia to experience the 2020 Toyota GR Supra. Along largely unrestricted lapping sessions, we learned about the car's development through the team that's responsible for making it, including the chief engineer.

About the 2020 Toyota Supra:

Twenty-one years after the last Supra vacated American dealerships, Toyota has unveiled its replacement. The 2020 Toyota GR Supra is a two-seat sports car designed to take on the Porsche 718 Cayman, and it's engineered with more than a little help from BMW. The new Supra is thus a curious mix of German and Japanese parentage, but Toyota is adamant that it has its own distinct character.

The 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine ― an inline-six, in keeping with the heritage of both BMW and the Supra ― produces 335 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. It's mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel. This combination, a staple of BMW's gargantuan model range, should offer an appealing mix of smooth operation and strong performance. It won't be slow ― Toyota claims 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds when using the launch control function. The top speed is limited to 155 mph.

Toyota emphasizes that the Supra is a usable everyday car. As you'd expect at this $50K price point, such features as dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and power-folding mirrors are standard, with a comprehensive lineup of passive and active safety equipment, including automatic emergency braking and a lane departure warning with steering assist.

Those seeking more luxury can upgrade to the Premium model for an additional $4,000, which features a larger (8.8-inch) touchscreen display with improved telematics including wireless Apple CarPlay, a 12-speaker JBL audio system, wireless phone charging, and a head-up display system. Premium buyers will also get to park their derrieres on heated, leather-wrapped chairs, replacing the microfiber suede used in the standard car.

Everyone should ditch the crappy rebadged BMW Zupra and just buy the new 2020 Corvette instead since its about the same price range, mid engine like a real exotic super car and even way faster!!

New Supra: 333 hp, 3397 lbs. vs. 27 year old 1993 Supra: 326 hp, 3210 lbs. Compare to 1993 LT1 Corvette: 300 hp, 3210 lbs. vs new Covette: 460 hp, 3298 lbs. Toyota has completely fallen down on this one, especially considering that BMW puts the same engine in its cars in 382 hp and 444 hp versions.

I like it. Its a great car. Only single complaint i have is that there is no manual option available. Other than that it looks great. Oh and also the badge placement on the rear. Looks cluttered.

still needs a manual transmission..it’s not like you have too much power on this car that pedal shifting is the only option.

Carlos, thanks for fleshing the car out in this review. So, own an E86 Z4M? Or the new Supra? WWCD if given the choice between the two? I am thinking, wondering if the two cars have a bit in common regarding driving experience.

The steering wheel is not BMW. I've seen a few videos of people making that mistake. It's Toyota. The BMW wheel is thicker and smaller, which you noted but still said it was the same as bmw's
