We discuss the various Stability Control lights, and how and why you might see them illuminated on your instrument panel. There are three distinct situations that may result in one of these lights being illuminated, and unlike ANY other warning light, this one will come on to indicate that the system is doing its job! Watch our demonstrations.

This is useless, there is a 4th reason, something is malfuntioning, and the light comes on and stays on. In this situation if the care is shut off, it will not run again until the code is cleared or the problem is fixed. Mine is on and so ti the ESC service message. The ABS light is not on and never has been. Thanks for nothing. I need to at least drive the car to my garage/shop.

While the video does address malfunctions towards the end, do I understand that the car will not run while the light is on?? Please tell us the manufacturer, as we have never seen this anywhere. Is the check engine light on as well?

Regardless, no video will repair a broken system. It is time for a good repair shop.

There are two things telling you the system needs service. Any warning light with a wrench in it says this, and you have it. Plus, the light stays on. With stability control, this is always an indicator or a system problem. It needs hands on diagnosis. Any damage done recently? Accident, BIG pothole, or??

Honestly, what you described is NOT normal. If the lights stays on -- not flashing or blinking intermittently -- it means the system activated and discovered a problem with the SC system. A number of issues COULD have resolved themselves, but do NOT ignore this if it continues to happen.

The bottom line here is there will need to be a hands on diagnosis done by a qualified shop. I have not seen a case where the stability control light alone was activated while a vehicle was RPM limited. What you may be looking at is the Check Engine light, not the stability control light. Regardless, get it checked out. Good luck.

I have the EPS and ESC lights on and my steering wheel is locked. I just drove my car to the store, when i came back out they were on. I have slight low pressure in some of my tires. Could this be why?

DashboardSymbols.com In reply to tassia holley

Ok, so the car is running, and the steering works (NOT locked) but works hard. If I now have this right, there is a serious steering problem, AND I'm am just realizing that EPS is Electric Power Steering!!!!!!! So, there are only two things you can do. With an electrical issue in today's cars, sometimes a re-start of the car will reset it. BUT, I think you've done that. So, the other is to check fuses. Maybe you'll get lucky. ESC will resolve once the steering is working.

Well, first, "the car idles on its own" sounds completely normal, so I'm sure I'm missing your point. And second, the car may "feel" like its lost power because the tires are smaller, but I can assure you this is only an illusion. It has the same power it did before the tire change.

There's a VERY easy and short answer to this. Yes. And to my understanding, there is nothing you can do other than return to the original tire size. The stability control is not available to help control the car when that light comes on. (I am assuming it is on, not flashing, indicating that the system is off.)

Thank you sir for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. Perhaps you have some insights on my particular situation. I have a Dodge caravan with an odd problem. Occasionally when I start the engine, the traction control light AND the check engine light stay on. This is BEFORE I even put it in gear. When driving, I experience an obvious loss in power and struggle to reach 60 mph. When I then pull over and shut off my engine, wait a minute and restart the engine, the Traction Control light will go out but the check engine light will remain on. Now it will drive normally and I can once again reach 60 mph easily. In fact, I can put the pedal to the floor and accelerate rapidly, which I could NOT do previously. After a while, the check engine light will go out as well, and the vehicle operates just fine. What do you think???

Sometimes the most perplexing problems have the simplest solutions. I'm hoping anyway. Thanks again.

Wow, sorry, but that will need someone hands on. However, I can say that the traction control (likely off) light is on because the engine has a problem. The problem is resolved, so the car runs normal and the traction control is back on (light out). However, the car knows somethings needs to be checked out, so the check engine light stays on. Make sense?

Bottom line, you need a good mechanic/auto shop...

While both ABS and stability control are important safety systems, they kick in in more extreme conditions -- slippery, hard turns, hard stops, slippery etc. Your brakes will work normally though and it is safe to drive in 'normal' conditions. Never know when something out of the ordinary can happen, so be extra careful.

Yes. Chances are this is an ABS problem first. The Advancetrac (stability control actually) needs the brakes functioning properly to work. So, repairing the ABS will take care of the stability control. Start with the ABS.

Ok, well, likely as not the traction light is on because the check engine light is on. Take care of the engine problem, and the traction control will be available again and the light will go out. As to the check engine light, there is only ONE thing the driver can look into. Make sure your gas cap is tight. If its loose, tighten it and the lights will resolve in a few minutes of driving. If its already tight, you will need the help of a qualified repair shop. Don't wait!

Andre Beason the thread is different now. The front tires are worn down and you have new in the rear. Go get two new tires for the front. Same brand and design. All the tires need to be the same thread depth and thread design or the computer reads it if it is not. Do not mix and match tires.

I don't know how to do this, but it MIGHT be possible to recalibrate the system. Good luck.

Well, lets see. The simply act of changing tires wouldn't affect anything in the traction control. Reading between the lines, is it possible that the tires on the back are now a different size?? Then the sensors (not ASBS) would detect that those wheels are turning at an unexpected speed. Has the tire size been changed?

Lett me ask you this, and I hope to get a good answer: I have Skode Octavia A5 2005, and this light comes up and it doesn't disappear, so the ESP warning light in the dashboard, that cause the brake light doesn't come up as this is an automatic car, and the surprise that the gear is stuck on Park, and never move.
Note: my car does not have a shift lock button to release the gear unfortunately.
What could be the problem here??
Note: that problem occurred RR days after changing the battery.

Well, first thank you for the follow up. Great info, and good for you getting what you needed. I am not familiar with the part OR the transmission release! That had to come from a repair manual, and I am going to check mine for my 07 Audi (same company). I am left to wonder if somehow that 'controller' got damaged when the battery was changed, or the timing is simply a coincidence.

Time will tell if all this helps someone else in the future!

well first of all i'd really love to thank you for your fast reply, however, the thing is i finally found the release button, and no one can ever imagine where it is, but for your info, its under the transmission it self, you need to remove a plastic chrome piece under the transmission, and then you will find a yellow lever when you push it, it will release the transmission, however the car will be driven on a fixed speed and will not shift to the next speed.

And that depends on the problem where it's coming from on the first place, and in my situation, i was driving on the 3rd speed, and it's an Automatic car, and the RPM is between 35 and 40 and the car didn't move to the next speed.

And later on today, i went to the dealer, and found that the problem is with something under the Brake Pedal, am not sure how to translate it :D but i guess it can be something like stop controller or or stop machine, but it a small part that is not bigger than a finger. and it's under the brake pedal and this is how it looks like

Once i changed it everything was cool and got back to normal and it was very cheap as well
and by the way, when it got broken, Cruise control, back brake lights, shifter, ABS, EPC completely stopped working

sorry for that long reply, but i wanted to provide you with the full info, you might be interested to know :)

Ok, did a little extra digging and found the manual for your car. First, though, I did NOT notice the line stating that the battery had been changed (don't know how to translate RR days). Anyway, unless the car was switched on when the battery was disconnected/installed, there should not be an issue. However, I would recommend making sure it was properly installed.

As to your manual, I too could NOT find a park release option. If you are on a hill, it could be jammed. It that case, have some friends push up hill will you try to shift the car. The fact that the ESP light is on suggests a deeper problem though.

Not much more I can do from here.

The oldest Skoda manual I have access to is from 2011, and the shift lock release is not a button, but is a lever hiding beneath a compartment in front of the shifter. There absolutely HAS to be something to get you out of park, and your manual will have the procedure. Start there -- I don NOT believe that the stability control system is controlling the shifter, BUT if there is a transmission problem, stability control will be off and the warning light on. Start with the transmission, and good luck!

Ok, this is a transmission problem, and a serious one from what you've written. Please have it looked at as soon as possible! The transmission issue automatically shuts down the stability control system, which is why its light is on. Stability control will be restored when the transmission is repaired. Good luck!
