Now that BMW has cancelled the 3 series tourer for Canada, I'm looking at getting the X3 xdrive 30i but with the M sport package. We took the X4 M40i out for a spin and it was seriously quick. I'm not sure we need that kind of power and the wife hated sitting in the back seats of that car. Again great review Thomas!

Autogefühl thank you again. By the way, you compare the X3 against the X1 and X4 in terms of interior space and driving feeling, but you never compare it against the Audi Q5 or Mercedes GLC. Is it your own rule that you don’t compare across brands? What would be your favorite among these 3 options?

I have this car from December 1, 2018, and pretty much agree with what Thomas says. People at my office asked me last week, how do I like my X3 (30i version) and I said it "calms me down."

It's exactly what he said, it's so quiet and smooth in operation. I had the prior 2013 X3 35i with the 300 HP turbo six and liked the surging power but it wasn't a "calm" car like my 2019 X3 30i. I think he says "grown-up" as well which says it perfectly. I like his precision in describing operations and hits the relevant points nicely. Having driven loaner 2018 X3 35i, X1's and X2's, I much prefer the X3 package. There was a numbness and squirrel-y feeling to them especially on my daily super-high curving transition from Hwy. 580 to Hwy. 24. I didn't like it.

No such problem with my new X3, it's solid, confident and smooth.

Also I like the usable space with the headroom (I didn't even consider the X4 for this reason, plus don't love the styling because it has such a big rear butt), rear seat and storage room. The 2019 X3 30i is a beautifully balanced car, works well, nicely designed, performs well enough power and handling-wise to keep me happy. It feels like it might be lower than my previous X3, I don't have to climb up into it. Though dimension-ally it's bigger, it's funny because it actually feels smaller than my old car, when you're driving or parking.

Not mentioned was the rear tailgate: Besides opening, I can also close it from inside the car, or using the foot gesture control which I love. It even beeps to warn you, and tested it on my friend and it will stop closing if it touches your head! Huge functional improvement, I use this every day with groceries, etc. My wife has a 2014 328GT and my newer car's gesture sensor is greatly improved. And I really like the interior (and exterior) night ambient lighting.

Good review and I especially like being out with Thomas on the streets of Germany. So it's not all high speed Autobahn's?

Hi, thank you for your helpful video. You mentioned in your video that the 30i takes 6 resp. 8 litres on motorways/ 100 km. These figures seem to be those announced by BMW. Do you check the real consumption while driving that car? I would guess the consumption while real driving will be much higher isn't it?

Денис Пинчук In reply to Gorone Julian

+Gorone Julian I decided to buy 30i because it was cheaper. We have local BMW factory in Russia, where X3 are producing. But there is one problem in it. It produces only fixed options packages. It calls local build. It reduces final price about 20-25% if compare it with configurable car from USA. So, if i could chose 30d in same package i would buy 30d. But in local version x3 goes with headup display, harman/kardon (only one option, that i like), full leather seats, without M-suspension!, and with 20` wheels. So, if i chose 30d i will pay about 7t$ more only for harman and diesel. My yearly driven distance about 20 - 25t km. So with diesel engine i saves only 500-600$/year on fuel and will have more oil changing service. Digital don`t look cheaper to buy diesel)

    • Gorone Julian
Gorone Julian In reply to Gorone Julian

+Денис Пинчук 9 l sounds more familiar to me. Maybe it's truly the heavy traffic in Moscow that causes the high consumption. I guess there is rather more traffic than in German cities!? Anyway, I'm still not sure if I should decide for the 30i instead of a diesel. The 30i is cheaper than the 30d but this will be compensated by the higher fueling costs when driving at least 20' km per year. On the other hand I would escape the diesel discussion. Why didn't you choose a diesel? Does the government in Russia fight the diesel too?

+Gorone Julian I just haven`t had a lot of motorway trips. Also we have to few motorway nearby Moscow. I just have had only one journey by countries roads for 500km long. After trip i saw about 9.5 consumption per 100km. There were some traffic jams and some cities on my way. I think, if i will drive at Germanies authobahn (motorways) i will get about 9l per 100km with avg speed 120km/h

Денис Пинчук In reply to Gorone Julian

Gorone Julian Sure, i’m talking about x3 30i 249hp (252hp europe/usa). My BMW dealer has told to me, that is normal case for the first kilometers, when engine consumes over fuel. I really wish, that it will decrease later. Today i saw 16l/100km without any traffic jams. When i have full tank i see about 440km of moving reserve. I’m really want to see average consumption 12l/100km for my lifestyle)

The X3 comes better equipped than the X1 and the interior of the X3 is also better and more comfortable that the X1. The X1 would probably serve well in an urban setting, but if you want more of a cruiser then the X3 is a better option.
