quattro four-wheel drive enjoys a lengthy tradition. The principle involves distributing the engine's power permanently and optimally between all four wheels.

There are many versions of quattro AWD. If you buy an Audi, that doesn't guarantee a high performance AWD system. The one on the RS models are high performance, but other cars may have it as an option.
The center diff is simply a good LSD made by Gleason Co, named Torsen (torque sensing). As in this video the torque vectoring by braking is a cheap way to do it. For better performance you need additional LSD-s on the rear and front. In the case of a RWD car, you can save weight by only needing one simple LSD.
As a comparison with bmw xdrive, they also have different systems, top ones and most expensive use torqued vectoring through advanced diffs. The cheap ones only use normal diffs.
The difference between top quattro and top xdrive is small, no idea which on is better but the bmw have better weight distribution. Anyway an Audi with a good AWD system especially an RS model should perform very well and be fun to drive as well.

I gotta get my 2010 A4 2.0T insured despite the high costs, been sitting in the garage for a year. My Dad got it for me for finishing Automotive Foundations. Only drove it for 4 months in 2017.

Not all Audi have this system anymore some have gone to another type system. cheaper my guess. the Q5 and the SQ5 are different systems.

I was looking at the older Quattro system in Audi 200 where they actually made the 2nd transmission shaft hollow and put the front drive shaft through it. But now they switch it where the trans shaft is inside the front crown gear and using another front drive shaft outside the gearbox itself. I wonder which one is better

Crown gear is an amazing invention. But Audis' engines are placed from the front axle forwards, which puts more weight in the front end and creates infamous Audi understeer even with quattro systems. It is so because Audi's are originally made as front wheel drive.

For example in Mercedes and BMW AWD drivetrains, being originally made RWD, the engine can be placed on top of the front axle, which puts more weight of the engine between front and rear axle.

Search for images of Audi/Mercedes/BMW drivetrains and you will see.

Guys! Please explain why rotating differential gears lock the plates when one of axles slips? I can't get the mechanisc: is there any force appearing that I do not recognize? And one more question: when turning front axle rotates faster, does that mean torque shifts rear?

I used to own an Audi 5000 back in the day....and damn it I miss having that car. I live in the midwest in a town with serious hills and that Quattro was a monster, I didn't care if it snowed an inch or several inches that quattro did the job.

Nothing come near to Quattro and the driving experince is awesome! But when it come to service after sales and sense of urgency in attending to customer they are lacking in Asia.

Yes best drivers car I ever owned Audi A4 b7 2.0 tfsi Quattro the grip and acceleration is very good, just a shame about the rotten *oil chain pump failures flaw* that Audi made me pay around £3000 to fix. https://blackstar4000.wordpress.com/2017/03/20/audi-oil-chain-pump-failure-resulting-in-engine-death-twice-audi-a4-tfsi-2-0t-b7-model-issues-since-2015-to-2017/
