Is the reborn MG brand on the right track with its crucial new crossover, the ZS? We grab a go in one in the UK to get a feel for the latest offering from the Chinese-owned British-marque.

This MG ZS is a UK-spec 1.0-litre 3-cyl Turbo version producing 111bhp and 160NM giving a 0-100kph acceleration time of 12.3 seconds and a 180kph top speed with 6.3L/100km combined fuel consumption. It's about GBP12,000.

In our region we get the 1.5-litre 4cyl version with 119bhp and 150NM giving a 0-100 time of just under 11 seconds with a top speed of 175kph and fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km. It's front-wheel drive with a 4-speed auto and is priced from AED44,000 ($12k).

You mentioned that the MG ZS was good for young people and families, don't forget the older people, we are 80 plus, we did have to have lessons on the electronics within,we found it very easy to get in and out of, we just got ours a month ago,and we find it very comfortable, it does everything we want, and we live in Queensland, Australia. The air-conditioning especially works well in our hot weather down under. Good review and very clear.

Actually the MG is assembled in the Longbridge Plant in Birmingham. They are also co developed at Longbridge UK and Shanghai. We get the 1.0 litre 3 cylinder engine here in NZ.

The design, interior and exterior, is superb. SAIC Motors build reliable cars but not overpriced as compared to established brands. The safety is also very good 4/5 stars ANCAP rating. Here’s the link https://www.ancap.com.au/safety-ratings/mg/zs/2cd523 . This auto craftmanship is a proof that UK and China produce reliable cars. Only time will tell if MG will be successful or not in the Philippine shore. Btw, it is a nice competition for having a lot of car options. Established brands like Subaru is not anymore producing purely in Japan, they have now a manufacturing plant in Thailand.Toyota is not also manufacturing cars in Japan. They are now producing them in Africa. "Made in China" is not always a bad thing. Btw, your iPhone is manufactured in China and it is not a bad thing. To add, MG belongs to the “The top 10 most reliable car brands” according to motoringresearch.com. Here’s the link https://www.motoringresearch.com/advice/buying-selling/10-most-reliable-car-brands/. The engineering design of MG and Roewe brands is performed by SAIC MOTORS UK TECHNICAL CENTRE LIMITED in Birmingham, UK. Here’s the link https://www.saicmotor.co.uk/our-capabilities/.

*6:35** "Driver does not need a GRAB HANDLE? Right? "Nah, we would like to give the driver a grab handle, as well. But, we can not afford it. That's it if you go "El Cheapo". All the entry level passenger cars. "NO HAVE GRAB HANDLE FOR DRIVER". Correct me if I am wrong? If I really need one how much extra for this luxury feature in the Middle East? Bangkok-Johnnie*

Not got it yet, but test drove it and was a dream to drive. A lot of reviews seem to judge it on cars that cost about 5 grand more. For real people who test drive it and in their price range will love it. I got the dynamic red Exclusive. It looks far better than the price suggests

It sounds like the New 2018 MG6 might be an improvement over the previous gen which already had excellent dynamics, judging from this ZS.
But bad news overall for those who bought the GS.

Good question. The AC was pretty good on this UK car and it was a hot summer this time there, though not as hot as here in the UAE obviously. Hopefully the Middle East spec cars will have an even stronger AC. But I can't be sure until I try one locally. Hope to do that soon. Stay tuned!
