A big key is to minimize spinning your wheels. Sometimes these vehicles can just idle over things.
Probably a good idea to remove the front bumper before off-roading.

Friend in the user manual recommend you that if you use your vehicle in extreme conditions off road, you must remove the front spoiler preciselyso you do not damage your bomper. This action also gives you more input angle, also costs you one minute to remove the front spoiler

+Daniel Swithenbank Firestone Destination A/T or M/T tires. Smooth on the road, great traction on wet roads and great grip off-road. A cheap lift is a 2" "budget boost" (coil spring spacers) & extended shocks, and then you can fit 31" tires.

People here giving the man grief for taking a Grand Cherokee off road are silly, that's what a Grand Cherokee should be doing! If you think that the leather seats mean you can only take it to watch your kid play soccer or to the local park then you're wrong. This is a very capable machine and any one with a slight knowledge of this car's specs and what it can do will tell you that this is simply one notch below the Wrangler. I don't venue own the car but it's so stupid when people see you off road'ing with anything other than a Wrangler and they immediately suggest that you should buy a Wrangler! If you need a car that can do it all, not just off road then this is the car for you, not the Wrangler. For most people this is the right choice not the Wrangler.

    • Urban Outdoorsman
Urban Outdoorsman In reply to Urban Outdoorsman

@FluffMuncher There are 5 clips on the bottom.. 1/4 turn clips. Remove those. Then, start on either side of the air dam, and put slight pressure pushing in on the bumper, while pulling on the air dam. It will feel like they don't want to unclip, but they will. Start on one side and work across. Once you get a few going it gets easier, just be gentle so you don't do any damage on the first try.

Urban Outdoorsman In reply to Urban Outdoorsman

I took mine off yesterday just to do it.. and it wasn't bad. A lot of people say its' hard to do, but the key is to push the painted bumper cover slightly toward the Jeep while peeling away the lower air dam one snap at a time from a corner. (Don't forget the 5 1/4 turn clips too.

Looks to me like the damage and failure to climb were more related to driver error than any mechanical deficiencies of the vehicle. People have always given the Grand Cherokee a lot of shit for being posh, but the high price tag isn't just for amenities. The vehicle is capable and luxurious. And that's why it's so expensive.
