Thanks for this video. I own a G85 now - partly because of your channel - with the Lumix 12-60mm f3.5-5.6 (kit lens) and the Lumix 25mm 1.7. I really like this basic setup so far. Very portable and compact. However I miss some features like higher fps to capture dreamy slow-motion footage. I am considering to upgrade to GH5 soon. My plan is to go on a 1.5 year backpacking trip and want to make some travel films and also do some photography. Shooting basically everything.
Which 2 (or max 3) lenses would you recommend to bring on my trip with the GH5? (I want to travel light of course:)

@The Hybrid Shooter how about adding the Sigma 16mm f1.4 as the prime lense?

Petey Dixon In reply to Petey Dixon

@The Hybrid Shooter Leica 50-200 seems very good but its too pricey. I will probably put my travel kit together like this: GH5 + Leica 12-60 or 12-35 + one prime lens for low light and blurry backgrounds. No telezoom as it is hard to carry anyway on a year long backpacking trip.

Stabilization will work, but you will basically loose AF. It will provide good results though. I am currently testing upcoming Leica 10-25, that is excellent lens, but it is big and expensive. Leica 50-200 is very versatile telephoto / macro / portrait lens, 8-18 is very good ultra wide lens.

@The Hybrid Shooter Thanks. I will go with the GH5 than. How about pairing it with Sigma 18-35 1.8 and Viltrox? What other lens would you add to this setup? I guess I would lose stabilization when going with the Sigma though.

The thing is: today the lenses for the S1 are very limited. For someone who wants to buy right now a new Panasonic camera it is very hard to decide. I've been watching every single video on YT of G9/Gh5/S1 comparison. I still don't know if I should go for a gh5 12-60 2.8-4 or speedbooster 18-35 or for a S1 24-105 f/4. I mean the main difference for me would be low light conditions. But is there a big gap between a 24-105 f/4 on a FF and a 18-35 1.8 on a MFT? The price difference is huge as well. Gh5 with 18-35 is around 2300 whereas S1 24-105 is like 3400. Which leave us some money to buy a 100-400. This is a really hard decision knowing that gh5 is a 2 years old body. This leads me to think about getting a A7III 28-75 2.8 Tamron for less money than the S1 starter pack. But I personally don't like Sony user interface!

Alex RS In reply to Alex RS

@The Hybrid Shooter yup I fully agreed. I will try to test both gh5 and a7iii before taking the decision. MFT is just a more affordable option (100-400 is insane, and really attractive). 28-75 tamron is not stabilized so I think a gimbal is necessary. It's just a matter of making concessions. Thanks man!

The Hybrid Shooter In reply to Alex RS

That is difficult question. Personally I wouldn't go with GH5 and 18-35 with adapter. I definitely recommend native lenses like 12-60 a 15mm Leica. If you need low light performance, A7 III and S1 would be better options. A7III has by far the best lens selection with great budget options but S1 is easier to work with, so it really depends on what you prefer.

I use my GH5 professionally for 90% stills and 10% video and love it. I came from Nikon and hate the huge cameras and lenses so the S1 doesn't appeal too much. If you know what you're doing and use the right lenses, most people don't know the difference between MFT and FF. Great review. I hope they don't kill off MFT.

I've been trying to choose between the GH5 and the G9 i'm in a similar shooting situation as you. i shoot stills about 90% and video 10% and just wondering how much different the stills capabilities are between the 2 are is it worth giving up the video capabilities of the GH5 for the Stills capabilities of the G9 or is the stills capability a close match?

Just suscribed to your awesome channel. Very informative! How are GH5 colors compared to the G9? I have been very pleased with the colors of the GH5s of a friend but 10mpx is a bit low for my photos. But the G9 has the reputation of being much better in colors. What do you think? Thanks!

Nice video. I think the S1 is a better buy over the GH5. Yes it’s a bit bigger but the advantages are huge. It’s a 4K low light monster with solid codecs and great ibis. It’s ridiculous to write this camera off because of a 4K 60 crop. First it crops to a size larger than an Ari Alexa. Secondly it’s only on 60fps. Sure the GH5 doesn’t do this but the sensor is already tiny.

    • The Hybrid Shooter
The Hybrid Shooter In reply to London Street Rider

That depends on how much you shoot in 4K 60p, some of the filmmakers shoot most of the footage in 4K 60p. At the moment, there aren't any lenses that would compensate for that crop, expect for Leica options. M43 is definitely not a tiny sensor. Most TV productions are still using cameras with much smaller 1" sensor.

You said you should only use the GH5S on a tripod or a gimbal, but ummm...you can DEFINITELY use it handheld with a stabilized lens and without ! Naturally, some people's hands and arms don't shake and wobble when filming.

The GH5 (original) has 5K Open Gate 10-Bit. That sealed the deal for me. Slapped a Metabones XL on those puppies (which makes my 1.4 Aperture lenses 0.8, 2.8 lenses 1.8, and my 4.0 lenses 2.5) so I’m not stressing over low light. Plus if your going for the film look, I only take it up to 800 ISO (1250 if I’m really in a bind). Anything else takes away from the film look and starts looking like video IMHO).

Excellent video! It's a really good thing to do a review that shows how a camera, 2-years old which some people consider an eternity, is completely worthwhile.

Some people would say: Well, I can get that Blackmagic Cinema camera for less and it has better functionality. Beginners mostly or ones who just look at price/functionality. Two very different cameras for different people. There is some areas where they can be used together. But when you start using them for their true and intended purposes, the differences become apparent.

I think Panasonic was very smart for building a couple of fantastic, professional-level FF mirrorless cameras. While I am very happy with my Panasonic m43 system, I'll be looking into the S1R for potential higher-end fashion and portrait usage. What I've seen so far has been incredibly impressive and think it might knock the Nikon D850 as the best fashion/portrait off the mantle as the best camera for my purposes. Though Nikon did a fantastic job with that camera and it's several years old. It's one of those cameras that will be remembered for years. As I think the Panasonic S1(R) will be as well....

m43 and FF compliment each other very well and there is no need for m43 users to be concerned IMO. Keep up the fantastic work my friend and Panasonic!

The Hybrid Shooter Not sure I understand what you mean by that. Why do you lose manual settings??? Are you saying you can’t control aperture, iso and shutter speed when shooting at 120p???

Unlike on the GH5, you can't use manual settings while shooting high-speed video on the G9, so it is not suitable for that. 1080p quality in non-high speed video in terms of sharpness is very similar.

Follow up question! I have a GH5 and am expanding my business (real estate video). I’m considering buying a few G9 bodies as it can do the same 1080 120p shots I use the GH5 for in my business. Any thoughts on the quality in 1080? Would you consider it similar? As I rarely use the high end video features of the GH5 buying G9 bodies for my team and saving a few hundred dollars seems to make sense. Thoughts?
