In this video I am going to give you my top 5 picks for a reliable SUV for under $3000. We are not going to be concerned with looks, 0-60 times, or even MPG this video is about RELIABILITY only. So basically I am going to cover cars that are cheap yet have no major or commonly known engine or transmission issues.

I am in Washington, and to get a 4Runner of any generation under 3K at a dealer it would either have a million miles on it, have body damage, or have many broken parts. I have a second generation, and it really just is a Tacoma with more seats, a built in campershell, and an electric window in the tailgate. The third generation feels alot more like a proper SUV than a truck with some addons, Toyota did an impressive ground up redesign for it.

It would have been helpful if you had included mpg. I'd love to see you do a video on reliable full size vans under $5k.

The only one of these I still see on the road sometimes is the CRV. The others used to be good before they all rusted out.

I bought a 2000 4runner and I must have gotten a lemon. I bought it due to it's low miles. This was 2014 and it only had 90K. I had to replace the transmission at 100K and at 115K i hit a pot hole and the entire rear axel cracked which totaled her. It's a shame because it was a lot of fun. Best snow and off road vehicle I have ever owned. But the trans mission thing put a sour taste in my mouth. I'd only buy another one if it were a manual.

1st gen CRV is far and away a VERY good choice. Burnt valves are a rarity, but the B20's in those are pocket change. 1st gen CRV's ARE the CRV to own though from an enthusiast perspective. Manual gearbox and absolutely bulletproof reliability. I owned a shop and worked on Honda primarily for over 10yrs. I would take a 1g Honda CRV around the world with a manual. Burnt valve is a cake repair...I could do it in 2hrs, on top of the fact that a burnt valve will cause a very low rpm idle hesitation but as rpm builds it'll still make plenty of power to keep you going. B20's overall are bulletproof reliable in a crv.

Ehhh, I’d love to know where you can buy an XJ or a 4Runner for under 3k. I’m not sure you can get either for under 5k in decent shape.

Exactly! If you find an XJ that is stock, not rusted out, and under 200k miles, you are going to pay $9,000 easy. I have seen a 2001 with 91k sell for $14,500!

Interesting video - IMHO All should be diesel engines NOT petrol - Ford_AJD-V6 / PSA_DT17#V8 - petrol burn rate driving essentially a heavy tank = low mileage range. yes, I know it is America and you guys do not care about the planet, or fragile eco system of earth, but surely more miles per dollar on fuel means something... It still amazes me the low HP these USA 3.0 and 4.0 litre engines develop... compared to European norms. Ford 2.0 litre = 160 horsepower and 40 mpg highway or think 245 horsepower from 2.0-liter maybe an eco boost / turbo. A typical 4.0 litre Range Rover L322 engine or Land Rover / even poser BMW X5 rates at so much higher than 160 HP - your big engine low HP per USA petrol engine etc seems comical :)

Not bad but to get below 3 grand, these things are going to be in the 250-300k miles and they will have lots of tiny defects and could well crater in only 10k miles. Do yourself a favor and save up 6k and get one with under 180k miles.

Cherokees and blazers are cheap for a reason. Jeep and reliable don’t go in the same sentence together. They are cheap to repair but what you don’t take into account is HOW OFTEN you’ll have to repair it LOL

I have, but it wasn’t a 90’s model. It was a 2001 blazer, but it was a special edition Trailblazer (I know there’s a car called trailblazer) but the Trailblazer was originally just a trim for the Blazer at some point or something I’m pretty sure
