With SUVs and crossovers continually gaining popularity, Honda made some big upgrades to its already impressive Pilot 3 Row SUV. Upgrades aren't just exterior styling, but also interior features and changes in feature availability. One huge change is that Honda Sensing is now standard on every trim level. The strong points of the Pilot are that it's very practical and spacious, but doesn't drive quite as well as some competitors, particularly the Mazda CX-9. Although we have the fully loaded Pilot Elite trim, I will cover the others from the LX to the Touring as well!

CORRECTION: the Adaptive Cruise Control is NOT full stop and go. What do you think of the 2019 Pilot? Which 3 Row vehicle would you get in this class?

I bought 2018 CX9 and the reason simply because is best looking 3 row crossover, stylish and upscale premium look in and out, plus better mpg, better deal, more features for the price you pay, and the kicker 0% apr. I used to love Honda/Acura, but they lost me as a customer 10 years ago. The last good product I have from Honda is my 07 Acura TL, still keeping it. Honda/Acura went from builting stylish sexing looking cars to odd to downright ugly vehicles now. They also used to pack with features and values for a good price, plus great handling. These days they tried too hard to be different and end up with cars that is jack of all trade and master of none, ugly design, no soul or DNA they stick with plus became super pricy. I really don't see the appeal in Hondas anymore. And personally, i m probably the minority, when it comes to SUV/crossover, I will take style/sexy look, better handling with premium features like standard LED or HID headlights over practical. Cuz If I want practical, I would of gone with minivan. Just my opinion.

Gotchya! I like those ones you’ve mentioned and don’t think you could go wrong with any of them. All provide good value in different ways. Good luck with your decision and thanks for sharing it with me!

Prime Autotainment well, I’m a value buyer, so it’s not going to be a Luxury brand. If Lexus offered a better infotainment system I would buy my wife the RX 350, because Lexus makes great cars that hold their value.

Right now I’m considering the 2019 model year Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe for incredible value, or a Subaru Outback. Where we live the winters are cold, wet, and sometimes snowy, so we need all-wheel drive.

Honda, Mazda, and Nissan all have engine reliability issues and lack CarPlay (Mazda and Nissan), so they’re not on our list.

Good points in all of that. Since you’re getting rid of your pilot do you plan on replacing it with something else?

Verns The Man you’re right. I believe their most unreliable car is the CRV and when buyers want mid-sized SUV’s, a company can’t blow it like this...This year CRV sales are down 17 percent.

I knew when they came out with that 1.5 turbo it would be trouble. Honda hadn’t sold turbos until the 2017 CRV.

I don’t work for them or get commissions but if you let them know you saw it on YouTube they might be more generous 👍

Hi potential Honda Pilot owners, I want to post this so you are aware of the problems I have with my 2019 Pilot. It usually begins with the radio/speakers making a shorting/crackling sound especially when I would hit a bump and then eventually the 'entertainment' screen goes dead. My Instrument panel also went dead several times and I caught it on video(link posted below). Watch videos I posted in order, starting with 1A to understand what happens first. You need to listen loudly to hear the shorting/crackling sound. I have been on sites like Piloteers and Youtube and there are many posts with screen problems. My problem starts with the crackling/static/shorting sounds through the speakers EVEN IF the radio is turned OFF. It just deteriorates from there and then the screen goes dead. It usually reboots, sometimes several times in a row. On Jan 8, 2019 it did not come back on even after I stopped the Pilot, turned it off, and restarted (as seen on the last video). I purchased the Pilot in October 2018, I have had it for a total of 3 months. This is the second time it goes in for this problem. This time Honda has had it for 3 weeks. I just want to add I love the Pilot, but unfortunately I've come to realize lemons do exist and I bought one.
I am really disheartened by these problems. I bought a brand new Honda because of it's reputation for carefree reliability, I purchased a fully loaded top of the line $70000 Honda Pilot Touring so I wouldn't have to deal with problems for many years to come.

Watch the videos in order to understand what happens:

Thanks for mentioning the 9-speed issue! How about reviewing the Honda Ridgeline? I also want your opinion which you like better, 6 vs 9 speed? Which feels better?

    • Prime Autotainment
Prime Autotainment In reply to Ron Dail

No problem! To answer your other post, there’s not actually a front camera, just the rear parking camera so sadly you can’t use it to help with hills. Some other vehicles offer the surround view but this doesn’t.
I have a 2018 Ridgeline walkaround, but didn’t drive it. I will hopefully be reviewing a 2019 model sometime early in 2019.
I would honestly want to 6 speed. Before this refresh, there were some known issues with the 9 speed. They said they made changes to it so only time will tell, but I’d rather be safe with the 6 speed. So the options for a 6 speed tranny are LX, EX, and EX-L.

does the highlander and pilot use real leather or is it faux?

Prime Autotainment In reply to Kevin James

If I was planning on regularly using the 3rd row, I’d definitely go Pilot because it’s more spacious. I don’t trust the Honda 9 speed transmission because of problems the last few years (even though they made changes for 2019...time will tell).
I prefer driving dynamics of the Highlander. For me and my situation, I’d go Highlander...if I truly need extra space, I’d go Pilot

    • Prime Autotainment
Prime Autotainment In reply to Kevin James

They both advertise “leather trimmed”...but I’ve heard and it feels like a vinyl coated leather, not true full blown leather.
Toyota uses a synthetic on most other vehicles but Highlander doesn’t use that “Softex”..but still doesn’t quite feel like leather

On the Driver Information Interface of the 2019 Pilot, a list of apps appears. I prefer the navigation app displaying a compass and street name. On my 2017 CRV, I was able to have the compass and street name displayed by default. Does anyone know how to keep the navigation screen as a default display without having to manually do it every time the vehicle is restarted? Very frustrating!
