I’m a big Hyundai guy but the interior looks really cheap. Did you notice the wear in the plastic around the back of the shifter? Isn’t this brand new?

Must be the lighting as this is a brand new vehicle and it didn't have any wear marks as i double checked in person haha I think if you were to be inside of one you wouldn't find it cheap at all

Real Canadian Car Reviews In reply to Michael Ching

@Michael Ching here in Canada it has no features on that button. The park sensors button is on the passenger side so they added a "dead button" to the drivers side just to even out the look, not missing any feature at all. Maybe someone who has an American model can tell us if they have a button there or not and if so, what does it do.

Just test drove one of the Konas. The car is quite likeable, but what bewilders me is the average fuel economy reflected on the dash. The one I tested showed 11.3 l/100 km. That would be standard for a large V6 SUV but not something as small as the Kona. This one here (7:52) shows 25.8 l/100 km. Is it just an electronic glitch or wrong settings - or is the car really that thirsty?

@Jon Smit As I have been putting miles on to the engine, the mpg is steadily increasing. For only a total of 290 miles on the engine, it has improved from the 7-8 mpg to 21-23mpg. I fully expect to hit the 25 mpg around the 500 mile mark or sooner.

Highway 32 mpg is what I would expect, but your "local mpg readings" are still not right. The poorest city mpg that Hyundai promises is 25, not 21-23:  https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/PowerSearch.do?action=noform&path=1&year1=2018&year2=2018&make=Hyundai&baseModel=Kona&srchtyp=ymm

Haven't hit 1K miles yet, but just wanted to give you an interim update. Up to 290 miles on the engine now, took it out for about a 20 minute highway ride @ 65mph, with A/C full blast on a 88F day, with 80% humidity, and was getting 32MPG. Local mpg readings have been 21-23 mpg.

Are you sure it's about the rust on the wheel arches? I would think to protect from rocks/debris being thrown up from the wheels/road?

    • Real Canadian Car Reviews
Real Canadian Car Reviews In reply to Patrick Vaden

well both really. When the rocks and debris get thrown up, they cause gouges in the paint and therefore they will eventually rust. Dual purpose but the end result of body damage is always rust so i like to think they thought of the end result of said rocks/debris being thrown up into those areas.

have you tried the 1.6L Turbo? If not id try it before you move past it onto a gas guzzling V6. If it still isn't enough power, that's why we make the 2.0T in the Santa Fe for more HP.

It has a USB port and a AUX input right in front of the shifter! Sorry i thought i had mentioned it but you can also use Bluetooth wireless audio on the Konas well. Plus your smartphone in for Android Auto or Apple Car Play as well and then you have access to your music library and podcasts.

It comes with a manual mode on the auto ( dual shift mode) but no true manual transmission with a clutch. The unlocking system works with the proximity key and they have little black buttons on the side door handles. No fingerprint needed but you will need to have the key on you for this to work and lock or unlock your Kona. Hope this helps!

Can a six foot guy with a big beer belly fit in it? I might go to a dealership tomorrow to find out. The fact that you can get a turbo on such a small engine is the only reason I'm interested. My second car at age 18 was a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire. Super light car and under powered. I currently drive a Silverado and I'm sick of the lack of turning ability. I only use my truck as a truck like once a year. I have learned that you can rent a truck negating my need for a truck as a home owner.

late to the party, but, I am a Big Chick. I've driven Santa Fe's (4 of them) since 2002, and was a tight squeeze. The Kona is shockingly roomy. When I went to test drive it, I asked the salesman to put the seat all the way back, and tilt the wheel all the way up. Sat in the seat - I couldn't reach the pedals, and had to stretch to reach the steering wheel. Had to scoot the seat forward a bit and bring the wheel down. I doubt you will have any problems in a Kona.

it is also to prevent corrosion on trouble areas where on other vehicles you typically see rust build up. I'm an automotive painter by trade and i have seen this in numerous other vehicles without the cladding. I think it will become more and more standard.

For this type of vehicle I don't mind the cladding. I would prefer a more built-in screen but this does have the benefit of being in the line of vision more. I'd just use Android Auto for the map, goes dark at night. The 1.6 is much quicker I hear but I'd go for something lower priced. I sat in one and liked it. Cargo space might be a deal breaker, hard to say. I do like the layout, sensible and straightforward.
