Funny,If you look at the oldest VW Advertising, it actually had the Nazi swastika in it
The first Volkswagon corporate logo had the swastika prominently displayed right in the center

I drove a 1967 VW Beetle model one back in college, where looking back at its performance: It was a remarkable vehicle with how forgiving it was when it came to maintenance. And it was a vehicle that would not just "up and quit" on you when the engine had problems. Instead, the engine would die a slow death. The transmission and clutch were nearly indestructible, too.
If that '67 Beetle possessed the quality of plastics and metals that can be found nowadays, I'd probably still be driving it. But, as it was, the plastics and metals of the 1960s were not great; hence, there were always some "nickel and dime" problems of breakage among the components in that vehicle by the mid-1970s.

I Bought a 1998 Beetle for my Wife! She Loves her Beetle! It takes 1.25 hours to change the Oil after cleaning up the mess/mass of oil that dribbles out everywhere! It seems every time something goes wrong, I spend $400 at the parts store! The car has amazing agility in corners! Even now at 21 years old, the 2L gas Engine Still Runs Strong! I'm not disagreeing with Scotty! The Beetle is Quirky! (I'm being Nice about that! And I have come up with many new colorful metaphors during the repair sessions ! ) I have to do my own work on it to Afford to keep it going! Each Repair job is a adventure! I have to buy special tools almost every time something needs work! The tools needed are more cost efficient and research and a few hours nosed into repair manuals is the way to these odd little cars on the road! D

I had a 2003, it was fantastic, for about a year. Sunroof stopped opening, got stuck in Park cz the solinoid broke, drivers window worked best when it rained, didn't work at all in the winter.. transmission was slipping in drive, a tune up cost $900. Had various other things break down. I was so frustrated, It was only 6 years old when I sold it and a piece of junk.

I am driving 2010 VW beetle, (old style body) since 2012, I had no issues except a simple $37+labor rear shock replacement. it is now 120k miles, Interior and exterior look like new, there is no color fading on plastic, no cracks on leather or anywhere. So much fun to drive and drives like new, gas mileage is great, it is an amazing car.
