Not your typical pickup! Not your typical diesel either, this 1000hp cummins pickup has some serious character, and boy does it get down! The owner was testing at the Bayou Drags this weekend, and although he never mad a full pass, it was a treat to see this thing rollin' coal!

      +Jake 1 Diesel fuel is heavier and oilier than gasoline and when it was first used in cars during the oil crisis of the 1970s, people found their cars covered in soot. Indeed, diesel engines can emit a fair amount of nitrogen compounds and particulate matter as they burn diesel fuel. These facts combined to give diesel fuel a bad environmental name, even though it in fact emits lower amounts of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide than gasoline does.

      Like i said, he said it too, pressure drops, the system returns to its normal state and it stalls again. A cycle that does the stututu.

"Since the flow is drastically reduced but turbo is still on its inertia", statements like that are exactly what make me question your knowledge. "still on its inertia"? fucking rofl.

      about 5 months ago
    • ShΣtland
      ShΣtland In reply to MASTERSKITLEZ

      @scootbmx01 you dont understand what i say. I'm not sayin it is open throttle surge. Or that the air is being chopped.

      It definitely is surge. And the stututu is the system surging/recovering cycle.

      Due to its inertia the turbo is still at high rpm.

      Onto throttle closure, or sudden rpm drop ( let off throttle on a diesel), the response will be surge. Since the flow is drastically reduced but turbo is still on its inertia, the operating point will shift to the left of the map (i.e surge area)

      Now, take any physics book about centrifugal pumps, theres a chapter that talks about "line blockage" and the surge phenomon is very well described. With graphs of the pressure after discharge, and shaft speed.

      @fasterthanaturtle
      While that lack of efficiency is a big deal with commercial or daily commuting applications, it really only relates to fuel efficiency and only makes at worst a minor power loss, although that is offset with the reduction in temperature as the unburnt fuel draws heat out through the exhaust. So racecars/trucks usually don't worry about spending the money to perfect the AFR.

      A larger engine turning slower will produce more flow through the hot side of the turbo, as you're shoving the exhaust gasses from a larger chamber into the same area, resulting in an increase in speed to let all of that extra air flow. It also is a matter of combustion chamber pressures.

      So, an engine the same size with a higher compression ratio/hotter timing will result in more exhaust pressure being sent to the turbo than the same engine with a mild tune even running at a higher RPM.

      RPM is a big factor but far from the only one.

      about 5 months ago
    • fasterthanaturtle
      fasterthanaturtle In reply to Somiih

      @Gᴜᴛꜱ • ᏖᏂᏋ ᏂᎧᏬᏁᎴ Ꭷƒ ᎴᏗᏒᏦᏁᏋᏕᏕ lack of oxidizer "air" limits the ability of the fuel to completely transform it's energy. This lacking the transformation of all the fuel dumped into the cylinder. Yes, fuel can increase hp in diesel engines wo adding air but at a greatly reduced efficiency. Isn't rpm the only way to produce exhaust? The formula for turbo energy? Larger intake and cooler dense air increases efficiency along with removing exhaust restrictions. I love tech talk, thanks. I feel you just said what I said but in more of a science way and if you could elaborate on the your statement so I can understand the difference I am always happy to learn.

      @fasterthanaturtle
      Fuel produces energy available to be burned by an oxidizer, be it in the form of compressed air or nitrous. RPM doesn't necessarily correlate directly with boost, either. High exhaust velocity and CFM is what creates boost. Balancing the right amount of fuel with the correct amount of oxidizer (air) is a delicate balance in most engines, but diesels can actually get away with just dumping as much fuel as they can with only slightly reduced efficiency. In fact adding extra fuel can be used to help keep the hot side of the turbo cool.

      about 5 months ago
    • fasterthanaturtle
      fasterthanaturtle In reply to Somiih

      @Gᴜᴛꜱ • ᏖᏂᏋ ᏂᎧᏬᏁᎴ Ꭷƒ ᎴᏗᏒᏦᏁᏋᏕᏕ fuel produces rpm, rpm produces boost, boost produces g force. At low exhaust flow, no turbo, with turbo boost the fuel can get most power out and don't waste energy and will see no smoke
