( www.TFLcar.com ) The brand new VW Atlas and the newish Nissan Pathfinder are both family haulers that can be purchased with a third row seat. But which one of these two crossovers is better off-road. We decided to find out by talking them up Gold Mine Hill.

I'm a long-term fan of body on frame trucks - but that Atlas intrigues me (as a father of 4, who wants to take the whole family along)

I own a 13' Pathfinder, and really like this vehicle. Disappointed that it couldn't make it up that hill

The new 'Pathfinder' is made for 'paved' paths. Do not drive off-road...

I used to take my family camping and do the 4WD roads in a proper Mitsubishi Montero SR. I have been on Gold Mine road outside of Colorado Springs many times, although this looks like a side path. However, I love this test and you rarely see them. These are the real kinds of roads you encounter camping even if not doing hard core trails. A forest road washes out or there's a bad patch. The Atlas had good specs with 8in clearance and better angles on the front and back. I wasn't clear if you could actually lock the transaxle and I assume there is no separate low range. Both would benefit from a better tire but it is still a good test. Frankly, all SUV-class vehicles should have to run a road something like this. I cannot imagine a CVT on these roads. I have ruled out all CVT vehicles which includes the new Subaru Ascent. Would be interesting to see if it could have ascended that last little rise. Good video!

Crapfinder. CVT=Crappy Vehicle Tranny. Nissan really has lost their competitive edge. It is a shame. I would not even look at them again unless reports come out they are going back to manual transmissions or proper gear changing automatics. Power plants need some refreshments. Designs need updating. Off Road division needs to go back to the roots of what the Xterra was like and produce something like that again. And or with even more capable systems for aiding it along. Like the VW had here. Oh well. All good things die I guess.

CVT is garbage steer clear of them. I have a 2019 Atlas I thought about buying a pathfinder until they said cvt. I don't want a belt driving my transmission.

Bring back the 4hi 4low, diff locker and redesign the pathfinder for a new launch. This crossover fails to live up to the name.

Wife and I had a rental pathfinder and it was a sh!tbox. Can't believe anyone would pay money for it. Ugly, lazy handling, very poor interior quality, and a sluggish engine. We are german car owners, and nothing compares to German car quality, advanced engineering, tech, and performance. It's impossible to drive anything less after you've had a bimmer or audi\vw.

Cars these days are like robots. they will DEICIDE if they wanna go or not. Good old fashion cars would burn their tires, get side ways, claw their way up the hill and do whatever the driver demanded. Not the computer packed garbage you see so called SUV's we have today.

Question (if you know the answer) - in your comparison to,the Chevy Traverse, you did the rear hatch ‘race’, and the Atlas didn’t close using the remote (As I expected), however, in this video - Atlas vs Pathfinder, you did the same rear hatch race and it appears the Atlas’ rear hatch closed using the remote...is that so? Please tell.

So much pathfinder hate and don’t get me wrong I’d never ever buy one. But they sell three times the amount with this generation than the previous generation. So why would they stop making it a crossover and go back to making it a truck? To lose money??? If these tank in sales maybe they will but I highly highly doubt it. I do think they need a new off roader. We need a new frontier and Xterra on a new truck Frame.

This is sad for the Pathfinder. Not only does the Atlas have more appealing lines and exterior design, the Pathfinder now is a FAR away departure from the capable versions before it like my nonstop '94 Finder. ... Great video thanks!
