With a killer combination of affordability, utility and fuel economy, the juggernaut compact SUV class is partially responsible for marginalizing the classic family sedan. Perhaps the most recognized small SUVs in this class are the eternally feuding Honda CR-V and redesigned-for-2019 Toyota RAV4, which we tested in a multiday comparison along with five other 2019 models: the updated Hyundai Tucson, updated Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Rogue, redesigned Subaru Forester and defending champion of this test, the Volkswagen Tiguan. None of these are bad SUVs — even last place wasn't far behind most competitors, especially in the subjective categories we judge. Every SUV except for one topped the rest of the field in at least one category. Rather than look at just the winner, we recommend that you find the SUV that's excellent in a way that's important to you.

I actually enjoyed these reviews. I am currently in a 2014 Jeep Cherokee & plan to upgrade to the Cherokee Upland V6. Although Jeep scored next to last, the reason I am shopping for an upgrade immediately eliminated other possibilities in this testing video. Other brands may have tested better overall, but they had drawbacks where I don't want to cut corners. So, for me it wasn't necessarily who's the best, but what are the features of each compact SUV and which one works well for me. So, thanks guys!

The CX 5 certainly competes very well with the CRV, RAV 4, Tucson.

How silly. I test drove most of these and liked the 4Runner the best. You have to spend 35K on the VW to get the driver assist features that even the base model RAV4 has. I loved the way the VW looks outside and the inside is very spacious and unique. The turbo lag on the VW KILLED IT for me. It's literally a few seconds of no forward motion when you get on the gas from a start. It was IMPOSSIBLE to drive smoothly. It was either no power or full power and surging ahead. Total deal breaker for me. The CRV , to me is a mommy''s car so off the list. The RAV4 is the only other one with good cargo and cabin space that looks good. The Subaru is just too ugly to own and drive and I don't care how good it is. The RAV4 has too much intake noise at half to full throttle, almost like they added it on purpose but I could live with that one issue. I'm jaded coming from 13 years of blissful 4Runner ownership. Toyota quality is no joke.

@danny kelly OK... so at the end of the pavement, these comparisons are over... why then do they show the cars driving on snow where one could lose his life? Even the old VW bug with an air cooled engine emphasized their ability on sand and water

REALLY, no Mazda CX 5 Signature?? No Chevy Equinox??
My Mazda CX 5 Grand Touring Reserve (2.5 L. turbo and AWD) will STOMP the VW and all others for speed, styling, handling, luxury and safety. The Signature is a $2,000. step above the GT - R with a few touches like Nappa leather instead of "regular" leather, 360 deg. camera, front and rear parking sensors and interior foot lights. BIG DEAL (well, IMHO, not for another $2,000.) But FAR ahead of the top VW Tiguan.

WHY no Mazda CX 5 GT-R or Signature??
(And would your REALLY trust the "reliability" of a VW?) VW has one of the lowest returning customer % - for good reason. And yet you rated it #1?
This entire rating lineup and lack of some significant models tells me I will never again believe your auto ratings.
