A coal train and an intermodal train are dramatically different. There is no real "mathmatical" correlation between the two. An average coal car is going to be around 60 feet long over drawbars. Some of the cars you see on this train are over 300 feet long.

Awesome vid in HD. Four powerful engines in the front two in the rear and one a KCS big boy to boot. Just a nice vid. I LOVE frieght trains. Question: Can anyone tell me why companies put engines in the rear nowdays? Seems to me they'd just put all in the front and pull. Ive always wondered....thanx for posting! #railfan

Nice catch. 4 engines pulling 176 cars and 2 engines pushing at the end. I wish trains that long would come through the Pensacola Florida Area. Get more trains that long on the railroads and get those trucks off the highways.

@aneal138 That is a far heavier train than this one. Unit coal trains in the 20k ton range are somewhat unusual and certainly far heavier than this intermodal train. So to do the math you really need more data such as, are these containers loaded or empty.

For the coal train you can estimate by multiplying 150 cars (a very, very long coal train) by 130 or so. This gets you to a weight you can at least estimate by.
