With millions of CUVs flying off lots there is no doubt, quantities are not limited. However, as good as many of the affordable options are from Mazda, Hyundai, Honda, and Toyota, many buyers are looking for more luxury and refinement. So jumping to a premium brand like Audi, Mercedes and BMW make sense. We try to break down the pros and cons of stepping up to the BMW X3 30i.

I miss when all BMW’s had the same black VDO gauge cluster. You know the one... e30, e28, e24 etc. Digital gauge cluster will look so dated in 10 years.

Haha, gotta love the differences in the car specs all around the world, I am in the UK and will get my X3 M Sport next month, I am stunned by the differences most notably (perhaps even obvious difference) is the boot (trunk for some), the boot floor and load lip are totally level on UK cars but then we don't have a spare wheel just run flat tyres. The lack of a spare gives extra storage and a dedicated place to put the boot cover, very useful. Nice review and an interesting take on what is good and bad in the car, us brits think the car is huge with masses and masses of space in it.

No Savage. Just be smart. Don't EVER buy a BMW. EVER. If you have a brain and know anything about automobiles. I am an automotive engineer. BMW's suck. Complexity for complexity sake and how they make their money. They are among the most unreliable cars in the industry. In part because of their complexity but also because of their design. They are not designed for longevity. From their turbo motors to all their body control modules and sensors to their electronic dampers.

If you were honest and you understand automobiles and without question you do...you would call the brand out for what it is.
It isn't about nth degree aerodynamics, or fuel efficiency, or weight or .5 seconds 0-60....its about whether the god damn thing will last and they don't. Higher end the BMW, the worse they are. The E-65 should have sunk the company. Only idiots with more money than car savvy would ever own one. Absolute rubbish and you know it but you tip toed around their poor reliability. Toyotas or Hondas do not have this issue. Even American cars are much more reliable.

Just about every brand is more reliable than BMW. GM products might be the only exception(and only certain GM on the lower end) .. I was at the BMW dealership about to complete the trifecta for German cars and all the customers there told me to walk away now while there's still time. I did leave immediately, lol...... I already own an Audi and a Mercedes Benz and the Benz hasn't been much better. The Audi seems great though.

You totally bashed bmw for its complex infotainment system and costly maintenance. Yet, you gave the Volvo XC60 a slap on the wrist for its crap infotainment system and everyone hiding the truth about its expensive maintenance too. I have yet to see any complain about Audi high maintenance costs but they pay every organization to overlook that major aspect.

Certainly agree with vast majority of positive comments on your reviews; presentation, music, MUSIC, camera work, honesty, candidness, etc. Keep it up. Now...why I, having the $$ for a BMW would NEVER own or lease one.
(I'm an auto enthusiast, love to drive hard, especially in the twisties, and have loved BMW's since the first 2002 was imported. To explain to 98% of those reading this...NOT the year 2002, but the model number of the 1st high volume BMW's imported to the US...app. 50 years ago.)

      1. I DO NOT buy ANYTHING just to have the name or badge!

      2. Terrible value when considering reliability, dealer (at least the one here) "service"(?) and inconsiderate (spelled LYING) sales personnel. Ex.- friend bought a 3 series sedan... "...it was supposed to be green, but another salesman sold the one we put a deposit on..." Asked if the color was available from another dealer and was told..."we don't do that"...dealer swap. (My Acura dealer has gone nearly 500 MILES to swap for a color I wanted...over 200 another time!!!) Gluttons for punishment, friend's' next car was an X3. "...we wanted a blue one, but the dealer said they only IMPORTED a limited number of that color..." IMPORTED...from SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA to Florida????? They believed him!!!...wanted that badge that bad. No other reason...driving machine??? ...friend doesn't know oversteer from the b-pillar.

Which, sadly is the case for, probably, MOST BMW owners/lessees...just gotta have that badge, of which maybe 1% know it represents a spinning propeller! Fortunately, I didn't get sucked in to the "got to have badge" syndrome...ever and am thankful for it. Not limited to spinning propeller...same applies to the 3-pointed swastika, the connected zeroes and the brand I drove for over 20 years...when it was a VALUE to do so...Volvo. Yes, yuppies and younger...you DO learn things regarding value and sensible buying in 82 years of life...you'll see!

They actually have a HUD button on the 4-series. It is helpful, but I find the HUD settings in iDrive is not that hard to find, after you finally find it. I sell BMWs, and am very happy with the new X3. It is a big improvement from the previous gen. BMW does a lot for their customers, and the iDrive system is the best. Yes it is expensive out of warranty to maintain, but you get what you pay for with the build quality. Also, you can program menu items, by shortcutting them on the radio keys. Pretty user friendly. All you do is have the menu item highlighted/selected in red, then press and hold the key you want to designate that menu item to.

By a street mile ... this video is the best piece of information sharing about the BMW X3 on Youtube. The depth of both criticism and praise for different elements of the entire process is good and accentuates the way in which it was executed. It shows a deep level of knowledge and know-how, and reasons for doing things in engineering terms. It shows a gracious approach to the brand marque and is neither cynical nor over the top. I immediately related to quite a few comments made, and especially about the high-tech infotainment system ... but luckily for me, even though I'm retirement age I am an engineer with experience in computers/iphones and digital general, so I guess for me easier to absorb. But the comments are very accurate about everything, especially the digital systems. I chased around looking for a good video, as I intended to look to buy an X3 ... and buy one I did, mostly after much thought and several sessions on this video. Thank you for being "structural" and unsympathetic in your video, but at the same time ... telling it as it is, unlike some of the other supergloss trade videos and car magazine efforts. I bought a 2019 BMW X3 M40D and have to say, yes there's an awefull lot to go wrong ... but at the moment it's an awesome SUV and simply love it ... after learning how to fly it.

The cons are far from being dealbreakers. Those future potential tech problems will likely surface after 5 years of ownership. For people like me who lease, we won’t be seeing those issues at all. As for the price, let’s be honest, most BMW buyers can can comfortably afford it.

Would be nice if any Japanese company copy-pasted the shape and utility. Being able to rest two elbows at the same time for motorway driving is not high tech.
Lexus doesn`t offer trunk space besides LX. RAV4 is simply uncomfortable for someone 5ft5 (170cm) in height. Same goes for Forester.
Having a spare tire is also a forgotten feature - in a SUV with AWD!
I live in Japan, want to go outdoors and it is likely that I will have to buy Cherokee Trailhawk. Shame for Japan, kudos for America and Germany for design utilitarian vehicles.

As usual, a terrific review. The interior touch screen jutting out of the dash is a horrendous design idea, many manufacturers are doing this now including Mazda and it is just the worst thoughtless poorest design I've ever seen. The way to do the screen properly is the way that it is done in the Porsche Macan. Integrated into the dash excellent in its intuitiveness and function.
