Pretty sure they are AWD, not 4x2. The center diff lock is needed incase 1 wheel loses traction, instead of sending all power to that wheel, it splits power 50:50 to front and rear diff.

it all depends on needed space in your adventure vehicle. Some like the spaciousness of a full size SUV like a Suburban, while others can get by in a Suzuki Samurai :)

Both platforms in my opinion are great with right additions.

TenaciousD It's worth it. i've been meaning to see Perth. I had 5 Jeeps before switching to Cruisers. My XJ's were wonderful with the 4.0 AMC straight 6.

WJ was ok until 200kms. 3.0 WK blew up at 75'000kms and Wrangler fell apart.

I would love to find a low mile 1996 XJ Limited in blue.

Yeah by far the worst thing about owning a Jeep is the dealing with Jeep! My wife and I are on our 5th Jeep now over many years, and from day 1, I've always said that if we buy a Jeep we have to be prepared to do everything ourselves, and so far so good, never dealt with the dealership for anything, managed to figure everything out myself through help from forums, FB groups, youtube vids etc, and for anything difficult a Jeep specialist mechanic (so far not needed, touch wood).

Overall we've had a great run (hence why we keep coming back for more haha). We're in Perth and I just returned from a 12,000 km trip travelling from WA through SA and NT, was absolutely awesome, did many dirt roads and outback tracks, we love it, our JK was flawless. And previously the JK replaced my old 2001 WJ Grand Cherokee 4.7 v8 with Quadradrive, it had 316,000kms on it, never skipped a beat, always started, never dropped any fluid, it was my bush basher, used it for camping trips once a month and by the time I sold it it had rock rash or dents from offroading on every single panel :), I was sad to say goodbye, best fun per $ vehicle I have owned so far.

My brother has a similar approach to steering clear of the dealership. He has a 2008 XH Commander 3.0 CRD, currently has 270,000kms on it, not real issues so far apart from blowing intercooler pipes of all the time (fixed with a custom alloy pipe) after a ECU tune haha, he uses it to tow his drift car and camping trips. It tows so well, never seen anything like it, it just doesn't know that its loaded up at all, coolant and trans temps don't move (using scanner to monitor them via the OBD port) and feels solid. He never wants to part with it.

Anyway, sorry this is a long post. I could talk about cars for ages haha!

Vic High Country is a beautiful place that I have yet to visit. Our next trip across the Nullabor we're planning to go around into Vic, so hopefully sooner rather than later.

Shame to hear Mr. Cairo. Sound like you had a lemon :(. But I am also aware the the 4.7v8 in the LX470's is great, tested through time now :).

For me I love the fact that the JK is simple inside. And I do love that I am able to get the CRD in Australia If only petrol versions were avail like in the US, then I most likely would not have bought one.

Speaking generally, JK's are geared towards people who want to do wheeling trips, its a weekend toy, made cheap enough for people to buy and wheel, simple enough so everything can be removed/replaced/customised, few creature comforts like elec windows to keep the majority of people happy, and rugged enough to get the job done in stock form. When used for this purpose they are unbeatable.

For overlanding and expeditions, most people would prefer a wagon, quieter, more comfort, usually better economy, etc (my CRD gets me 650-700km per tank of diesel so that’s pretty good, petrol version is a joke though). And I don’t blame them. All of these things can be built into a JK though, which so far I am happy doing to mine. Like I said above the JK is cheap to buy initially, but then can be built into whatever you want. The LC’s start off very expensive for not much on offer (at least here in Australia anyway) as far as offroad ability (interior is nice though). I actually love the LX470 version of the LC’s and have considered buying one in the past (I would never be interested in a normal Landcruiser), but changed my mind after weighing up the initial cost and then the cost to fit a lift and 35” tires, and the terrible fuel economy that was going to follow.

Anyway what I’m saying is that there is no comparison between the LX470 and JK Wranglers. Totally different vehicles fundamentally. Owners’ will buy a LX470 for a specific purpose, then if they want to go offroad they’ll mod it to be more like a Wrangler type vehicle. Then Wrangler owner’s will buy a Wrangler for a specific purpose and if they want to go overlanding they’ll mod it to be more like a LX470 type vehicle. Only the extremely modded versions of each will meet in the middle.

budnixon I traded my AEV 2014 JKU for my last of the series 07 LX because the JKU was god awful. Plastics were so cheap, freedom top leaked, waterpump leaked, power steering pump went bad, ride and range were both unbearable on the highway and then at 27kms the valves in the penta-shit needed doing. Don't regret trading it on a much older vehicle because the LX was still worth the same and has been amazing.
