But what's black ice? You may ask. Here's the Wikipedia definition:

Black ice, sometimes called clear ice, is a thin coating of glaze ice on a surface, especially on roads. The ice itself is not black, but visually transparent, allowing the often black road below to be seen through it. The typically low levels of noticeable ice pellets, snow, or sleet surrounding black ice means that areas of the ice are often practically invisible to drivers or people stepping on it. There is, thus, a risk of skidding and subsequent accident due to the unexpected loss of traction.

It's not black ice - it's the absence of winter tires

One morning, after my husband had been out all night with his buddy's, I woke up to find he wasn't home. It was very cold the night before, lots of reports of black-ice etc. My friend called on the phone and I said "I'll have to call you back, Mike's not home, I have to call his buddy's to see if he's there, I hope the black-ice didn't get him", and I quickly hung up the phone. I called and located my husband at his buddy's house, they were all drunk and stayed over night but never called (grrr). I called my friend back to tell her, and she said "Ooohhhh, black ICE, I thought you were saying the black-GUYS got him". ha .... (if you say black-ice, quickly, it sounds like black-guys - I guess you had to be there, but it was hilarious!)

I've driven over black ice and seen what black ice causes on your vehicle control. It doesn't matter whether you're driving 5 mph or 50 mph. If your tire hit one of these, it will slip. Even if the road are driving conditions, there will be sections on the freeway where there is black ice. 1-2 feet of ice you'll feel your tire slip then resume your tire normal spin. The best thing is to report it to transportation authorities.

I don’t know if it works as well for big trucks, but if there’s snow accumulation at the side of the road there’s better traction on that than the bare ice.

Once in Minnesota a pile up occurred, I stopped and got out because that’s what everyone else was doing I thought someone was hurt, I could see the car coming towards mine slam on there breaks, probably going near 5-10 mph, I slide in front of there car to prevent them from hitting my car, one bone bruise later I’m back in my undamaged Lexus.

Quick question, why the hell are people parking their cars on the left hand side and just getting out of their cars and standing there? If you are at all able, always pull your car off to the right hand side and if you are unable to move your car, don't stand next to it on a highway or interstate, you go stand on the right hand side. Cars coming up may not be able to stop in time so just don't sit in the middle of the road. And this goes for any accidents not just ice. You don't have to, nor should you, leave your car in the middle of the road. Try to get it off the road to help traffic keep moving to to prevent another accident. Do they not teach this in driver's education or something?

When you're sliding don't put your foot on the brakes, you will just slide more. Accelerating, turning, and braking all cause less traction, especially when combining these factors. If you're trying to maintain or regain traction then don't do these things. When forced to due one of these things, try not to do the other two. If you're sliding forward but still need to stop quickly, it's about using the brakes slightly enough where you are not causing a loss of traction which causes you to brake less effectively. Sometimes doing this may include pumping the brakes in succession slightly. If you are in full slide mode then breaking will cause you to turn sideways. Sometimes this may be better seemingly only to avoid a head on collision in a guaranteed crash.
