I don' know the actual term, but they're just part of the container space of the car.

Did that coal train just run through a signal at danger?

    • Matthew Graziano
Matthew Graziano In reply to WRL13

No, the signal was green over red. After the locomotives passed the signal turned to red over red also known as danger.

Why are american trains so stupidly big? European diesels can take 150+ wagons without having to be 7 meters tall and 80 miles long

    • BaltimoreAndOhioRR
      BaltimoreAndOhioRR In reply to H5SKB4RU

thats cool. not to sound egotistical, but the long-range american locomotives are pretty much the best freight locomotives in the world (I'm not counting high speed trains, where american trains are woefully behind). one thing i will admit though, is that you seldom see them being used to their full capability. oh, and although it isn't a huge difference, some of their increased size is due to emission controls and safety regulations.

Francisco Pastor AC60, moving at 60 mph. Coal trains are not run anywhere in the US at intermodal speeds.

They used to open years ago, but they added corrugated panels to prevent damaged and keep people throwing rocks at the new cars. They're usually 3 high and offset ramps so the cars can be driven from rail car to rail car. Almost like a ferry.

Will Burkhart: a freight car designed to transport cars. Think of those trucks hauling cars on the highway in rail form. They are the silver boxes in this video.
