I had a 98 mystique 4cyl 5 speed as my second car. That thing was so fun to drive. Fun enough that a couple years later when my dad was getting rid of his 98 mystique auto trans I bought it even though it wasn't standard. These cars plowed through all sorts of Canadian winters and never got me stuck. Rip to my mystique s.

Allow me to reminisce for a moment, dear commenters-

I inherited a 96 “Mystake” GS, 6cyl 2.5 automatic, identical to the one in this video. Pacific Green Clearcoat Metallic and all. This was in high school back in ‘99, when the Grandparents decided it was too small for road-trips and upgraded to a new Grand MarquisAnyone who’s owned one with the 2.5 would know - the car was kind of a dog from a stop with its 4 cyl torque. In a 60 mph highway pull, it was no slouch, especially for the time. That engine sounded good, too. Great N/A induction noises at high revs - Dare I say, NSX like? Ok, like an NSX with an Accord exhaust. Anyone who’s driven a Contour SVT would know what I’m talking about...Anyhow, for an 17/18 y/o, it was a pretty good car.

these cars were a death trap. no matter how well its maintained seat belt buckles would break and driver and passenger seat welds would break off the track no matter how well it was maintaiend i wish my dad never bought that car in the first place. it was a big mystique more like a mistake.

I worked for a security company back in 2009 that was still using a fleet of '96-'99 Contours and Mystiques. The cars hadn't aged well at all. Granted, people treat a company car like a rental or a stolen ride, but still--the design-related issues were apparent, and there were things that shouldn't happen to any car at all. All I can say is that I get the idea behind it, but I don't understand the cheap build quality.

I had a 1996 Mystique. It would be easier to list the things that worked correctly on the car than to list everything that went wrong with the car. It's a shame really because these were very attractive and nice driving cars. Ford took planned obsolescence to a whole new level with the contour/mystique.
