Motor1 Executive Editor Seyth Miersma gives Jaguar’s turbodiesel XE the Why Buy? treatment to find out if this little 2.0-Liter has what it takes to power a proper sports-sedan.
For more Jaguar XE:
As-tested price: $55,245

Jaguar has a history of building sports cars and sedans that are as great to look at as they are to flog on a winding road. The British company has had somewhat smaller success in building vehicles that blend those characteristics with the practical concerns of many daily drivers, especially here in the U.S.. The XE 20d – a reasonably affordable compact sedan with a frugal diesel engine – could be the product to change all of that.

In this week’s Why Buy? video, we put the diesel-powered XE through its paces, hoping to see if it has what it takes to win some market share from the luxurious German and Japanese competition. Perhaps more importantly, can a Jaguar really feel like a Jaguar, without its trademark exhaust purr?

Engine: 2.0-Liter Turbodiesel I4
Output: 132 Horsepower / 318 Pound-Feet
Transmission: 8-Speed Automatic
EPA Fuel Economy: 30 City / 40 Highway / 34 Combined

Could you share the dimensions of those 2 suitcases that were used to demonstrate trunk space? I'm trying to get an idea of the usable trunk space before possibly buying an XE S and this is about the only review where I see someone actually using real life stuff to demonstrate!

.....reviewing a 2 litre diesel using a v6 petrol as his point of reference and complaining? Should we not be comparing this car to other 2 litre diesels in which it would possibly be a good choice of car?

In the U.K. the jaguar xe r sport looks way more better than the example in your video and does more mpg than you said and has more querks to it but I don’t know if there is a difference as I’m from the U.K. because I got one as a company car and they gave it for high mpg and running cost but great video!

Just purchased a 20d yesterday and during the entire sales process I was thinking about this review. Thank you very much for the way you deliver information, I must have watched 40 other videos as well but this one stands out.

I just got back from a 2000 mile trip in my 20d and my average was over 43 mpg, which was significantly better than the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid that it replaced. Amazing mileage, considering I drove it hard and fast for most of those miles. Couldn't be happier with the fuel economy.

I drive 90 miles round trip 5 times a week for work, on those I'm averaging around 46mpg (my math not the estimator which is 2-3 higher) but on weekends when I stay in the city I'm around 35. Combined lands around 41, usually. Hope this helps.

it's something that's equally as good if not better then the regular 3 and you won't pass a dozen by the time you have gone up your road

Yep and it will probably depreciate like crazy like the jaguar XF does. Wouldn't mind getting one in a few years.

Looked at it. Very sexy. Interior quality is a mixed bag. I'm an interior designer and the details matter to me. Audi does a better job. Jaguar take note. I'd consider a better quality version.
