I was told not to ever use 4A.
Says it will damage your Transfer case.
And not only one dealer told me that.
      Several have.

Here in Alaska I use 4A most of the winter and have for the past 8 years (with my first and second F150 Platinums). Works very well, never have had any issue with the trucks for many thousands of miles. Only use 4H when driving in snow over 6-8 inches (or when I notice my undercarriage is dragging in the snow a bit).

    • mictdave1

My previous truck had the 4A option, loved it, used it regularly on snow/wet conditions. My new XLT doesnโ€™t have it, I get around just fine switching from 2h to 4h as needed. At first I thought not having 4A was a deal breaker, I couldnโ€™t be more happier with my XLT.

I live in Michigan and this week we have had about 10-12 inches of snow and wind chills down to about -30 to -35. As you might guess the roads are almost all complete ice and are very slippery. I have a 2018 f150 and I used the 4 wheel drive system making it effortless for the truck. The best part is putting the truck sideways and seeing the reaction of people sitting at traffic lights ๐Ÿ˜‚

My XLT has the same set up as the one Mitch talks about, works very well in snow, and we have gotten some bad storms in the last week here in Ottawa. Just remember 4WD is no replacement for driving safely and responsibly. Also 4 wheel drive is not 4 wheel stop, so slow down when it is snowing!

You can use 4h on the road as well. We use it all the time on snowy roads, even at highway speed.

Trey K In reply to celltech2013

The manual states it can be used on anything but DRY pavement.. so as long as the pavement is wet or has debris then itโ€™s ok to use. Iโ€™ve owned 3 different F-150 4x4 trucks racking up over 100k miles on each and I used 4x4 each time it rained.. which is very often.

+Alex Puls he said "on snowy roads". You can use it all day long on snowy roads.

    • Alex Puls
Alex Puls In reply to celltech2013

It's not intended for long use tho. The wheels need to be able to slip or else the drive line can wind up and cause damage to the driveline components. You could only be using it on snow, ice or dirt. If you read the 4 wheel drive operation part of the manual it will say NEVER operate the vehicle in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement.
