For years Volkswagen neglected the SUV segment, with just the undersized Tiguan and overpriced Touareg in their showrooms, but they’re finally bringing a three-row, seven-seat midsize crossover to market.

Is it too little, too late? If they hope to have any success in the segment, the Atlas has to win over customers that have been buying Explorers, Highlanders and Santa Fes for generations, and one of the best of the current crop is the Honda Pilot.

Volkswagen has taken a page out of the Pilot playbook, with a larger footprint placing an emphasis on interior space and cargo capacity, but does it have all the right moves to match up to one of the family favorites in this segment?

what sucks really is the engine
drinks a lot and feels dam slow
I think best would be a 3 ltr. Diesel here !
but thanks to USA politics and the fight against diesel, even if it is more environment friendly the Atlas get a shitty V6 gasoline engine.

2:55 you said the atlas has one more seat than the pilot but actually they are the same because the atlas only has two seats in the third row

VW hands down. If you need to make a quick move because of some idiot on the interstate, a sluggish pedal will get you killed.

How is the Pilot slow? It’s one of the quickest in the class and certainly a lot quicker than the Atlas.

But it is German and a VW - never a winning combination.
Unreliable and expensive to maintain and repair.

We always have affirmation of German Volkswagen technologic rigor , in July 2018 my father was very happy to buy a flagship version of the new Volkswagen (Teramont) 530V6 (2.5T) in Shenzhen, But driving to 4000 kilometers we found oil leakage problem of engine, my father ask the seller to a new car replacement but this request was unreasonably refused by the seller that made my father very depressed. I would like to ask how Volkswagen Germany can get a reasonable solution to Volkswagen China?

Rough ride? How sensitive are you? THe Atlas is one of the smoothest I've tried outside of Mercedes. It's not rough at all.

I would just get a Used Durango. No hate against these cars but they are just minivans that look better. If I’m buying an SUV it better do it all and all SUVs on the market these days are just undercover minivans that drive worse. The Durango can haul kids and tow while still getting decent gas mileage and the Reliability isn’t that bad compared to other FCA products.

Nice VW but one of my biggest concerns is longevity as thats where the real value is imo. 45k is a LOT of damn money for a 4 wheel depreciation wagon. You get a lot more for that dollar when you stretch the useful life of the vehicle. My family will typically put 150k or more miles on a car for this reason. Honda has a well earned reputation in this regard across virtually every vehicle its ever produced and the Pilot is no exception. VW on the other hand has been shaky at best and this vehicle is completely unproven. For that reason alone the Pilot gets the nod from me with all else being essentially equal. If after a decade the VW has produced the same record of reliability I will reassess.
