Thanks to an event called the Trail Trek Tour I had the opportunity to test a variety of every-day crossovers on some back-country trails in Virginia. The results were about as I expected but there were a few crossovers that did better than I thought.

Why no Subaru? Why no Rogue? Why no X? The answer is simple: all were invited, but only these 7 chose to attend....

Automatic disqualification of the video under 1-minute when he chooses the Subcompact Kona to represent Hyundai instead of the Compact Tucson, which would be the actual car to compete in this segment. He needs to get off that Kona obsession and if he's going to compare compact SUVs he needs to use compact SUVs... like the Tucson.

Off road and deep snow, the Cherokee is best option. It has the best AWD system and ground clearance. Plus it has the most torque with the turbo. It’s also sized right in the middle. If you want more on road performance choose the Latitude Plus or Limited trims. But if you’re an adventure the Cherokee or a Subaru are the best options

Mitsubishi Outlander GT. 3.0L 224HP V6, six speed auto and the Evo's advanced all wheel drive system with lock. It would have embarrassed every one you tested save for the Cherokee. Its no larger than the Tiguan or CRV so it would have fit in this comparison.

I have a 2nd Gen Rav4, hope the 2019 is a lot better than the previous generations. If so it'll defiantly be on my top of the list for Crossovers I'm considering.

Shame Subaru couldn't join the party, we just went to the new CX-5 after 3 years of Subaru XV Crosstrek ownership, in those 3 years the XV always felt full time AWD regardless of how slippery the road, mud, gravel or even light snow was.

No matter what Mazda say about their '18 CX5 AWD being as good as Subarus in the 3 months have owned it there have already been a couple of times it's felt a brief FWD indecision in slippery on road conditions before the rears engaged. Not bad just not quite as good as Subarus and the XVs extra clearance was also comforting on mild firetrails similar to your test to get to some of our favourite bushwalks.
