Greg -Your Car Angel - explains why the Lexus GX470 is the best used 4X4 that you can buy, comparing it to the Mercedes Benz ML320 and the Land Rover LR3. In term of comfort, reliability and workmanship it does not get any better than the GX models from Lexus. Lexus uses the same time-honored materials and assembly line processes that has been proffered by the parent company of Toyota. In the tradition of any truly capable off road vehicle the GX470 is the dominant player.

If you're looking for a Land Rover/Range Rover with similar mileage, check the junkyard.

Thank you. Confirmed my love of my '06 GX with 280000 miles. It's cosmetically getting a little rough so I'm going to do some upgrades.

When you buy used a gx470, do this: Change coolant, tranny fluid, diff oil, transfer case oil, engine oil, change air and cabin filters, change spark plugs, you must grease all u-joints and driveshafts (6 zerks), make sure the timing belt has no expired, change it asap if it did, inspect for rust. Now you are good to go.

My car just like the one you’ve shown... has a serious problem with cracking and sticky dashboard... there was a courtesy recall to replace the dashboard but not everyone was included in the recall... one big X on the Lexus service!!! Other than that I love my car!!! The dashboard issue is horrendous... as I’m worried when it will fall in my lap... yes it’s that bad!!! I’ll buy Infinity next time never again a Lexus... because they didn’t have the customer service that I expected! Very dissatisfied with that issue!!! Maybe someone out there knows a solution... I’d be glad to know! Email me at!!

I have an LS430 and GX470. I feel GX drives like a tank. I love the commanding ride, but seats feel too small. Do you think getting an LX will solve the issue? Not sure if either of GX or LX good for daily driving. They seem to be an overkill for daily usage.

As soon as your GX470 hits 160K miles - POOF! - expect all of your dashboard idiot lights to go on because your air injection emission pumps fail.  This will cost about $4k to fix properly.  (If you are really unlucky and the valves get stuck open, your car will go into limp mode and dramatically effect performance).  This fail will happen on AL GX470s.  Also, the navigation/stereo/Bluetooth/climate control unit will fail.  VERY expensive to replace with genuine unit.  This GX470 uses premium gas too and it is NOT good on fuel economy!  I would take a Lincoln Town Car over this any day.  Good luck!

The current GX470 (still) has an archaic Lo Res Infotainment system; non flat folding rear seats, and that side swinging rear door.

Nonetheless, I still like the vehicle. But I will wait for the upgrade, unless I can get one @ a nice discount.

Such a great explanation into this vehicle -they're hard to find. Would you consider this a decent minivan alternative? I'm looking for something comfy, safe and reliable for our family with 3 kids. My older one is already as tall as me (1.81 m) and he still has a few years of growth ahead... Also, Greg, you recommend the Toyota Sienna but not the 2010 model, why is that?

Got 2007 with 86K miles, South Florida driven - a typical mall crawler here. Cleaned, detailed, it looks and feels as a practically brand new Lexus.

+Jack O F F Anything under 120-130K miles would probably be the same, pending there is at least some maintenance history available for at least the second half of the mileage. Accidents to sides or back of the truck don't matter as long as there was no frame damage. Since these are frame trucks, they don't care about small to mid time accidents as long as the frame was not affected. I would not buy one with front damage though. On these trucks if head accident occurred - the frame would fold to soften the impact. Hence I would stay clear from such offers.

Greg I couldn't agree with you more. I just bought a 2013 Lexus GX460 with 89K miles on it and it is impeccable. Everything works, inside and outside look great and I couldn't be happier. The ride is a little rougher than my 2003 BMW X5 3.0i but its a hoot to drive. As for the BMW, what a money pit. Roughly 173K miles on it and everything that could go wrong has i.e. transfer case, oil leaks, etc etc etc. Thank you for the excellent videos!
