the engineer's don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954, but hear that lonesome whistle blow'in; still gives me goose bumps.

That also may need a tune-up.
Flames shooting out, and a bad muffler.
No complaint about the belching exhaust

@vector6977 First unit is indeed down. You can tell by the sounds when they move past the camera, and the exhaust being mostly stagnant.

Over-fueling, and the intense heat in the exhaust manifold and silencer are "afterburning" the carbon and soot.  As it emerges from the "stack" it meets fresh oxygen-rich air, and briefly ignites.

How do the engines in these compare to anything that's 2 stroke? I will say this that I think I love the lugging sound of these the best but i'm not an expert at all.

It's just wrong to not run the headlight when the train is moving. Headlights should always be on when in motion for safety.

Of course, runs very rich only at low rpm and full throttle, the turbo runs low for that amount of fuel and the air/fuel ratio is low, less than 17:1,and other cause the full throttle is for high speed, where the turbo runs well and the air/fuel ratio is better than 17:1 At idle(ralenti) the air/fuel ratio is very high 50:1 or more. If an injector has a serious problem, the flames go out in alternate movement, as showed in other videos.

I'd say the fire from the exhaust stack is due to it running too rich. There might be a faulty fuel injector, or yes, bad turbo.

    • nomon95
nomon95 In reply to Eric Perkins

yes,,,this is the problem. the engineer may apply throttle by steps,,no full throttle at low engine turns. the blue smoke may be the vent carter oil overheated, and this vent exhaust is cause for a compression rings leak, and oil overheated looses his ideal viscosity. My opinion.

Jim Olsen In reply to Eric Perkins

Actually the Turbo is OK. ALCO made the Transition from Steam Locomotives to Diesel early. They didn't believe that smoke was an issue since the Steam Locomotives made all kinds of smoke. The first unit is idling / Off Line so the second unit is doing it all. It's giving everything it's got. Look at 3:36, you can see the blue smoke coming from the Traction Motors. The black smoke when Throttling up and under heavy load resulted in the State of California banning ALCO's from coming into the State. That started the end of ALCO. When you have black smoke, there isn't enough air going into the Engine as in the Turbo hasn't had enough time to compress more air. The fire coming out of the stack is the unburned fuel catching fire in the exhaust and Turbo. If ALCO had a little more time, they could have fixed the smoke.
