President Trump would like the American public to believe that the recent layoffs by General Motors were driven principally by foreign import competition, particularly from China. The reality is quite different, says Steve Rattner.

What gives this televison bean counter and chart maker, sixty-six-year-old,
Steve Rattner, now appearing somewhere near you, analytic discoveries weight,
is it because he freshly dyes his hair for each and every appearance on Morning
Joe? there are many that think so…that can be measured with some success by
each and every charted dyed follicle on his head…

GM got complaisant, again! They are always asleep. When Toyota was being imported to the US GM was laughing at the harmless Japanese cars as a joke.

Toyota, Lexus, Subaru and Honda excel because of the quality. GM has not addressed that problem, so they don't deserve to be in business. No one has publicly questioned the union issue. Aren't all the plants closing, union plants?

So how come we aren't hearing about Toyota ceasing production of Corollas and Camrys. They keep selling Priuses while GM ceases its production of Volts. What percentage of sales are of EVs and driverless cars anyway?

Ford , GM and others had car manufacturer plants in China, so they don't need to import much of if not anything. Wtf.

What was said is 100% correct. Automation also needs to be taken into account. Blue collar warehouse jobs will be far and few between when that happens. So how does Trump plan on combating that.

Half of American workers make less than $15 per hour. Where is the money to buy more things? The poor/working class drives the economy by buying STUFF!!!!!!! Henry Ford understood this; todays crop of billionaires do not.

In the mid 1970s , GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc. started making terrible cars (Pinto, Corvair, K Car , Grand Am, etc. ) that fell apart in 36 months. I and all workers want to see a high quality, low cost car made in the USA so we don't have to buy a Toyota !

BMW USA is hiring, GM USA is firing. Trump's tweets are a load of b.s. GM simply does not make cars as good as the Germans or Japanese do. They fought EV's, car imports, clean air laws, anything you can imagine that would have brought them to a higher level. Instead they preferred to keep the American cars down at a low level of quality and high level of air pollution while at the same time raking in billions in extortion money from the Federal Government. What kind of business is that?! Get rid of it and start supporting Tesla for a change instead of spending a hundred million on false negative propaganda against Tesla. GM has become a criminal organisation and should be shut down and replaced by decent car companies if there exists such a thing, or otherwise start doing something to save our climate. That would bring in billions instead of costing billions in tax payer's money. And Trump, as usual, lays the blame on the wrong side. BMW USA is hiring, GM USA is firing. Import tariffs won't change that.

Trump can always just change his slogan to promises....promises....especially since it's more accurate and his slogan loving supporters never critically examine his slogans.

trump is president of usa, not gm. he doesn't make decisions about closing plants. but since clinton and democratic party ignored the rust belt ex-workers, voting for trump was the best message they could send. america is not a nation of laws, of plans or policies. there are no referendums in the federal government, much less citizen initiative. 'not-voting' for clinton was the closest the voters could come to saying the 'princes of politics' could be replaced by ogres such as trump, simply because they had no champion and no hope. american talking heads seem incapable of grasping the consequence of not having democracy. it is simply this: revolution is the only tool the people have, because selecting which politician sits in office does not get any visible result. no matter what they say in campaign, results can not be predicted. call trump the polite message, the next one may be violent.

Well in Australia GM managed Holden into the ground. It was bad management and a lack of understanding of the brand and the Australian market. If they can screw up what was such a strong market for them as Australia, its pretty obvious GM management is clueless.

Pres Obama Loaned GM, Tax payers money not the Government money not Obamas money and  never paid back the 11 billion owed to American Tax payers, they used the second Tarp program to payoff the loan not by GM Profits , So Pres Obama gave your money away with no accountability ! The Volt Hybrid will be discontinued, when was the last time you saw Advertising for the Volt ? Never  I worked at GM back in the 80s CEO Roger Smith went around the country looking for a site to Build the Saturn Plant remember, Cities kissed his rear-end offering Tax incentives and free land to build his plant. Tennessee was the new location 20 years later shutdown.  You cant blame trump for GMs mishandling of the company, what you can blame  are the leaders of GM . the workers that went from 700,000 employees to under 100,000 in the last 32 years. they made over 2 billion in profits this year go figure that into equation
