Hi everyone, since posting this video, I've re-tested the G9 to confirm a few things. First, it is limited to 10 minutes clips when filming 4k at 50p or 60p (but remember most cameras can't even do 4k at 50p or 60p). If you reduce the frame rate to 4k at 24p, 25p or 30p, you can film for 30 mins. The G9 doesn't apply a copt when filming video in any mode, whether 4k, 1080p or High Speed Video even at 180p - all use the full sensor width. And finally, focus peaking and zebras are available when filming. For more information, see my updated review at https://www.cameralabs.com/panasonic-lumix-g9-review/

I’m trying to figure out if the 10 minute 4K 50 limit is really down to heat issues. I know there is no cooling off period, so as soon as a 10 minute clip is finished it can instantly record another clip. Though will it overheat doing this during a summer day? I can’t find any reports of actual overheating

@Gordon Laing This is a Panasonic problem : they deliberatly downgrade the capability of the camera to make artificial diffeences. I am sure that the G9 could be as good as the GH5 in video if they wanted it to do....

I think it's more to differentiate it from the GH5 and GH5s.

I got this body to replace my aging GH4's. It's clearly a better photo camera, but I was originally unsure of it's video capabilities. After playing with it all day today and watching more videos of it throughout, I'm not as skeptical as I once was. That being said, I'm still, obviously, going to keep a GH4 on hand at all times, too.

Damn you and this video. I am currently using the GX85 but will be upgrading in a few weeks when the GH5s drops. I was stuck on either getting the GH5 or GH5s but you just gave me reason to consider the G9 as well. I am more of a video guy but am highly considering getting back into photography as well and that's where the G9 comes into play. How do you feel about the High Resolution mode?

Good overview Gordon. I think I'll stick with my G80 for now, still a great camera for video & photo and it was pretty cheap compared to the G9 & GH5. Some nice guitars in that shop too! And that Leica 8-18mm lens looks fantastic :-)

Paul Amyes In reply to Paul Amyes

No I didn't live in Brighton. I lived in Chichester and we visited Brighton on a regular basis. Most weekends myself and and a bunch of friends would drive down, have something to eat at Food For Friends (which was a popular vegetarian restaurant back in the early 1980's) and then go on to the all night showings at a film club called the Duke of Yorks. Don't know if they are still around. At that point Brighton had some good camera shops that carried a great selection of 2nd hand kit so that made browsing fun.  Phillip Bloom lives in Richmond another area I know very well as my sister lives in nearby Putney and  we'd  often go to Richmond Park or one of the pubs on the Thames.I wouldn't mind living in Brighton, but at this stage I'm very much tied to Western Australia as I've been contracted to write and photographically illustrate some travel guide books to the state. Maybe down the track we'll move back. Anyways keep up the good work. I'm quite interested in the G9 - I use at the moment mainly the OMD EM1 Mki and got a G85 for video. Panasonic's video implementation is very good and I could see the G9 replacing my EM1.

Again, thank you Gordon! Just one other question, does it crop in like the G7? I take a lot of photos each year along with video. I've considered the GH5, but I need an excellent stills camera that can take relatively high ISO images of very good quality. I don't like using a flash and silent shutter is a plus.

Gordon, my understanding is that you can shoot for an unlimited amount of time, no ten minute limit with 4K 60p when connected through USB power.

      Can you confirm that?

The G9's maximum single clip length is 30 minutes. I recorded several 30 minute clips in 4k to test the battery life; I managed almost five of them on one charge. I think this might have been in 24p though, so I will retest it at 50p and 60p the next time I have a G9 body and confirm.
