Matt and Davin have very different ideas as to what makes a good pickup. For this episode, Matt chose a 1979 Dodge Lil' Red Express - big Mopar V-8, extreme styling and very limited production. Davin, on the other hand, went with a 1933 Ford Pickup. Boasting the iconic Flathead V-8, this vehicle was born out of necessity and eventually evolved into Ford's incredibly popular F-Series pickups.

Bait n switch bullshit, FROM CAR GUYS... Picture looks like you're racing it against that street rod. Mopar guy, I guess I just missed where you informed him and viewers 79, that was the fastest AMERICAN productin vehicle made, that was today's Demon to Corvettes, Trans ams or , well Ford didnt have nothing that could get outta its own way.

That's ridiculous. Sure the Ford is 46 years older than the Dodge, so it's go the old car bit covered. However the Dodge is 40 years old. It's ridiculous to consider that contemporary in any way.

Funny fact the '78 Lil Red Express had no catalytic convertor, the '79 model did.

Should have done the little red express versus the 454 SS- Thats a cooler comparison. These aren't even on the same page... The 33 Ford is not a hot rod.

      1) The Lil Red Express, while truly awesome, is a terrible representation of "modern" trucks.

      2) The 78 (first year for LRE) was the only year to not have any emissions. 79 was still fast but the EPA caught on.

In the utility category you could easily argue for the Ford. In its day the Ford was extremely functional whereas the Dodge was never meant to be a work truck, and certainly wasn't compared to the array of offerings from the Big 3. BTW this is coming from a [former] LRE owner...

I personally like the Dodge better, but I think the Ford should have won the utility category. When both trucks were new, the Dodge was special and the Ford was just a machine with a purpose. That being said, I can't see someone in 1979 throwing tools and hay bales and whatever other junk in the bed of the Dodge; whereas since the Ford was virtually just another tool in 1933 I believe it would have been far more likely to have actually been used and abused as a pickup truck.

Dodge couldn't give their trucks away at the end of the 70's the ford had a wait list... everyone wanted it. Ford wins.

I would much rather have the old Ford over a rust bucket dodge with an underpowered engine by today's standards, even though you can't beat a good ol' dodge Stepside

Davin is right, old is better. I'm 16 and wish that many of the cars from back in the day were still on the road. It would be cool to be able to go over to a used car dealer and pick up a basic, 57' Chevy 2 door for 500 bucks. Now your lucky to get one for 15,000. The times suck now

As far as utility, the Ford would of kicked butt in its day. The dodge would not have done much in its day as most pickups in the 70's, had 8 foot boxes. Hence the Ford should of won. No matter what, the old Ford would of won it from my point of view. The dodge was an amazing truck for the times it was made though.

Ford in Australia invented the 'pickup truck', or 'utility'. No Ford truck? No l'il red express...

Falcon Powerful Dodge started selling trucks in 1918. Ford started in 1925.

Of course, you can argue the 1918 Dodge panel truck wasn't a 'pickup truck', and even then, Dodge's first 'pickup' trucks rolled out in 1921.
