Simplicity might seem like a turn-off to many car buyers today but I think a lot of them are wishing for that simplicity. Look at the simplicity of the iPhone's one button and how people went crazy over that even when the phone lacked features it should of had. Simple is better can be marketed with an SUV like the XJ in today's car market.

Almost like my 98 grand Cherokee. 4.0 straight 6. Parked it with 270k miles on it. I miss driving it but it was starting to rust out real bad. Drove it for 6 years. Loved the boxy design and how it sounded. Also we had a 87 Cherokee wagoneer and a 94 Cherokee. My mom rolled the wagoneer and it still was able to be driven on the road after words.

What about the Ford Bronco II. Manufactured one year before the Cherokee was put on the market and is a smaller crossover-ish suv. I’ll agree I would take a Cherokee over a bronco ii anyday.

      I have a 96 xj sport 4.0
      It won't die.
Still my favorite vehicle to drive.
Absolutely no blind spots and can easily see all four corners of the vehicle.
Mine is not lifted yet has gotten me through some aggressive terrain with no problems.

grand cherokee 1994 1997, with the same reasonable dimensions, is a XJ much more better, from all points of views, all points indeed; I have both cars, and I know completely what I said

Nope the 4.0 xj is way better than the grand Cherokee.
Its lighter with way better visibility.
Also the 318 cubic inch v8 sucks balls.

-First, its an XJ not an XJ Cherokee.
-Second, before the Cherokee, people in the suburbs had Wagoneers.
-Third, the back seat was basically designed to carry kids, hence its small size and no head rests. These were family vehicles. Also, youre about 6'5", so you take up WAY more room than a "normal" sized person. Im 5'10 and have more than enough room in the back seat. Also, as you noticed, it makes it WAY easier to see out the rear view mirror.
-Fourth, the spare tire under the luggage area is a HORRIBLE design, whether inside or outside. If its inside, then anything in the cargo area MUST come out. If its outside, then it rusts to crap. Ive had my XJ FULL of camping gear and changed the tire easily. Didnt have to dump anything to get the tire out and didnt have to climb under the vehicle and get covered in rust & dirt.
-Fifth, there were various radios in these. The one you have is a HORRIBLE console. My '99 is very nice and came with a factory 10 disc changer under the seat.
-Sixth, not all had those slider lights on the visor mirror.
-Seventh, most older vehicles had the turning dome light switch. Thats not odd.
-Eight, you dont need ANY mods to take XJ's deep off road. I lived in northern Maine and put over 150K on mine on dirt/no roads.
-Ninth, youre driving an inline 6 cylinder with 242cuin which is equivalent to a 350V8 so engine noise is actually quite low.

XJ's are a SUPER fun vehicle. Theyre like an off road go cart on steroids. You can pack a TON of stuff into them, tow with them, go anywhere with them, their gas mileage isnt any worse than new Subarus. You can get them with leather, sunroofs, etc., giving you lots more "fun factor". Ive had my XJ since 2002, longer than any other vehicle Ive ever owned (Ive owned 14). Including my 2011 Impreza or Forester, Id rather drive my XJ than any other vehicle Ive ever owned. And you cant stop an XJ, it'll go anywhere.

I work in the Auto Care Center of my Walmart, and one thing I noticed that is funny.
When we get an older vehicle in with the pull knob light switch, the younger people working there have no idea how to turn the lights on when we do the light check for the 15 point inspection on an oil change. I usually have to go pull the knob out for them before they get how to do it. And it's hilarious when they are trying to find the dimmer switch on a real old one with the floor dimmer switch. They almost break the turn signal lever trying to get the lights to go on high beam. I have to yell to stop pulling the turn signal and push that big silver button on the left side of the floor by the kick panel.

It's sad that I grew up with these yet the young individuals have no idea about them.

It was really telling when a young tech was trying to figure out how to change the light bulb inside a sealed assembly bulb like the old vehicles had. He had no idea he had to replace the ENTIRE light assembly, not just the bulb. We actually still carry those sealed lights at Walmart.

I had two, a 97 in the states and a 91 in my casa overseas. Regret listening to the wife and upgrading to modern cars. My x3 as nice as it is just doesn’t compare. Get an XJ or a YJ.... you can turn on a dime and park without a need for front and rear sensors or cameras....visibility is unexplainably perfect.
