Pontiac, it's one of America's most legendary automakers. Responsible for the GTO, Fire Bird, Fiero, Solstice, G8 and of course, the Aztek. But they're not around anymore, and that really sucks. So what ever happened to Pontiac? Join Nolan Sykes and find out.

Can someone tell me what the car on the thumbnail is and what year

I've owned a Fiero as my primary driver now for 30 years. Now have an 88GT with five speed I bought five years ago with 21K
on it and now has 47K. I'm 78 and have no plans of changing. Also have an 86 (Four cylinder w/five speed) which has been
sitting since I bought the 88.

No, it was because Obama killed them off purely because he hated the Middle Class (explaining his killing off Pontiac and Saturn) and Hummer because of his environmental radicalism.

Admittedly, Hummer had far outstayed its welcome. They sold giant SUVs with poor fuel economy and usually rather weak off-road capability. There was a point in time when owning a Hummer was something to mock, as they were horrible for the environment, but didn’t have the nostalgic “cool factor” working for them like classic muscle cars did.

Saturn was ultimately a bad play for GM. Saturn cars cost a lot to make (new designs) and many of their models didn’t sell well enough to give a decent return on the investment, even if a couple were quite successful. Their existence was also cannibalizing GM by stealing THEIR customers instead of supplementing them. The final straw was when Penske ended its deal with GM, and an attempted partnership with Renault and Nissan (to use some of their car models) fell through.

Pontiac struggled with the same problem Buick did: they had a decent lineup of solid vehicles with bland/ugly appearances. They’d become an “old people brand”. Difference is, Buick managed to rebrand enough to stay in the game (and was seen as a higher-quality semi-luxury brand internally at GM, whereas Pontiac was basically just nicer Chevy). Plymouth and Dodge had a similar fight for survival at the turn of the century, which Dodge ultimately won thanks to its stronger lineup of vehicles and perceived value.

You can blame Obama all you want, but these brands were struggling in the marketplace BEFORE he was even in office. While I believe Pontiac could have had a shot at a comeback with a little more time and money, Saturn and Hummer were doomed regardless.

Love my G8 but it may be time to sell it. Cost of keeping it up is taking a toll and I literally just had the tranny rebuilt last summer. I love my car but I don't want to put another dime in it if I don't have to do so. Love the Pontiac storytime btw. RIP Pontiac :(

Despite the secondary air pump, the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP and GXP (L32 and LS4) not only held up well, they where the REAL highway sleeper! Their torque made the acceleration unreal and the weight made it handle better then a Subaru in the snow.

The mid-70s was a good time for Pontiac. There was the Trans Am, featured in the movie "Smokey and the Bandit". What was the sheriff driving? A Pontiac LeMans sedan! In 1976 and '77, Pontiac was the leader in police vehicles. LeMans and Catalina police cars could often be seen in your rear view mirror. After those few years, GM basically gave all police car business to Chevy.

Pontiac was a soul and GM decided to drop the brand. Dropping Buick would’ve been fine since their today’s line-up isn’t so appealing. But c’mon, it’s fricking *Pontiac*
