South Africa is bakkie country. Our outdoor, active lifestyles are a perfect fit for the leisure-oriented double cab, but following the introduction of the facelifted Ford Ranger and new Toyota Hilux, which rules the roost?

The previous-generation Toyota Hilux had a very long and successful model life, but towards the end of that career was feeling the heat from Ford’s Ranger. Ford then turned up the heat even more with a comprehensive update towards the end of 2015. So, Toyota can ill afford not coming out guns blazing with the new Hilux.

But the Ranger is not its only rival. Isuzu’s KB continues to find favour with South Africans that appreciate its particular blend of sturdiness, dependability and dual-purpose appeal. And then there’s also Volkswagen’s Amarok, a vehicle that is regarded as heavily road-biased but which surprised us during our tests.

In this video we take you to Klipbokkop near Worcester and put the four bakkies through a number of test routines to discover their pros and cons, including an on-road assessment, gravel road driving, sand dunes, steep descents and gullies.

Performance stats and specifications for all the cars are presented at the end of the video.

As a blind person I prefer the Isuzu Kb for it's distinct truck typ of sound, especially from the models from the mid-late 90's which introduced me to the world of double cabs. Next, for me, comes the hilux. I like the d4d engine series but I wouldn't go for the 3.0l versions though because although they may be powerful and reliable they have far too much turbo noise, they don't have that distinct truck type of sound when reving and under acceleration, well, it is there but not that distinct compared to the Kb, and they also hav a fan in the engine that runs for a few seconds on start up and take off which sounds a bit annoying to me. The KB (D-Max versions) unfortunately have the same issue with the fan in the engine like the Hilux but I would take one if it didn't have the fan. If I go for a Hilux I would take the 2.5l d4d, if the double cab has a 2.5l D4d option because it doesn't have too much turbo noise and it has that truck type of sound, not as distinct as a Kb, but a lot better compared to the 3.0l d4d.

I have been a biggest fan of Isuzu, i bought my 1st isuzu in 2003 and it's 922 437 km on odo and i have never overhauled the engine nor replace the the turbo. The second one is 693 247km and i have never overhauled the engine or replace the turbo. Now in i bought 300 lx in 2017 and it is 54 0007 km, it feels like it will endure like its predecessors. Yo! guess what? i haven't sold one of them because they are still going strong. if you want to see them-0815544695

      mechanicaly,any 'v',is not as good as a streight 6 or 5,or 8 cyl.for the same size engine,a 6 inline,puts out more torque than a v of same cubes.plus,there simpler.cheaper to produce.&,should last longer being inherantly stronger...less bits flying round at 6k...

Toyota Hilux GD6 is the best. Yes Ford ranger wildtrack might have the best looking but when it co.es to durability Toyota in anyway is the best. In Namibia most hereroes believe in Isuzu but nowadays they realised that Toyota is the best.

The Isuzu makes sense, the Ford if i want to impress, the Amarok is a wild card. In the end I am going to go with the Hilux. Just for all round appeal! I feel I will bond with it the most lol!
